Food Plot 1A - Hancock Siberian Kale

Utilization based on game camera survey on this crop choice + evidence of use

Growth Results

I had always wanted to plant a pure stand of Siberian Kale, it grows pretty large and is supposed to be very nutritious. My only concern was that it has to be planted in spring, grows slow, and there is no herbicide labeled for use over Kale. I was afraid that weeds would be a problem - and they were. My Kale came up fine, but slow, and it was soon a mess with pigweed, lambsquarter, and dock infestations throughout the plot.

Activity Results

The deer did not utilize the Kale as much as expected. Given the long planting season and feedback I've heard from others, I had higher expectatations. They hit it hard after other crops were snowed in or inactive but it was less than impressive.

Comments

I am done with Kale. I saw no real benefit over other brassicas like Turnips and Rape which grow fast and compete aggressively with weeds. Utilization was below average as well. There are far better plantings for deer than Kale.
