As predicted the weather sucked for our last full day of hunting but we headed out anyway. We couldn't see the tops of the mountains so there was no sense in climbing them and being fogged in, so we cruised the shorelines hoping that the bad weather may have pushed the caribou lower where we could stalk them. Ninety minutes later we decided to head back and wait for the fog to lift.

Despite the fact that only Gary had killed a caribou, everyone's spirits were high. Neil and I had killed a bunch of caribou so we were perfectly content. Bill was having such a good time that a caribou was simply icing on the cake. I think the only one dissatisifed was Frank, like any good outfitter he wanted each of us to get a Caribou and was trying his hardest to make that happen. If we caught a break in the weather we were going to give it a shot - who knows.

Shortly after the lunch the clouds lifted and the tops of the mountain were clear. It was drizzling and a bit raw, but nothing to keep us from giving it a go. I packed my Sitka cloudburst pants and jacket just in case, but I headed out in my Mountain Lite pants and Jetstream jacket. I was more worried about sweat than rain. After yesterday's death march I was a bit apprehensive about climbing again, this time with Neil. Frank and Bill were taking the south end where we saw both bulls yesterday.

Frank dropped Neil and I off on the North end of the range and we started climbing. I felt good. By the halfway point I was perfectly fine, not sucking wind and moving upward at a good pace. The slope was far more gradual on this end.

Halfway up the mountain we spotted a herd of muskox and decided to stalk them for photos. We didn't bugger them too much and never got closer than 100 yards. Twenty minutes later we were climbing again and before long we had reached the top. It was completely fogged in. Zero visibility.

At the top Neil spotted an arctic hare and offered me the shot which I gladly took. It was an easy 28 yard shot which I missed by a hare. I wrecked one of my expensive CX Maxima Red arrows in the process but that's why you buy more than one. A moment later a call came out over the 2-way radio, Bill and Frank were heading back to the boat. The weather was bad, no visibility on their end either. It was the longest hike I ever had just to miss a rabbit, but there was no sense staying up here, this weather was here to stay. We were both ready. I was looking forward to a hot chocolate and Neil had a date with a tea-bag. We climbed down then met Bill and Frank at the shore. Our Greenland hunt was over.

Frank Feldmann and Greenland Outfitters

Frank and I corresponded shortly after Muskox bowhunting became legal in Greenland. Since that time he has been a pleasure to deal with and a absolute professional. He knows the country, knows the animals, and went out of his way to show all four of us a Greenland adventure we will never forget. Everything about this hunt was fantastic - gear, transportation, quality of animals, accomodations and the food. There is no better way to experience a muskox hunt than to do it in Greenland with Frank Feldmann and Greenland Outfitters. See the contact information below to book your Greenland adventure.

Gear Used on this Bowhunt: Arrows

Since last winter I have been shooting the new Carbon Express Maxima Red arrows and these shafts are just the ticket for getting perfect arrow flight from heavy bows shooting big, two blade broadheads like I do. They are the first arrows to use dynamic spine, the arrow is tapered at both ends rather than just the nock end like other arrows. This gives them faster recovery after release. Go watch my arrow flight on the slow motion kill shot video from day four, perfect arrow flight = terrific penetration. I had both, thanks to a well tuned bow, razor sharp 2-blade heads, and my CX Red shafts. More Information Here
