Larry Thielen, Region 1 Paul Topham, Region 5 Mel Kieninger, Region 6 Bruce Hennessy, Region 7

The IBEP Regional Coordinators are available to come to your jurisdiction to provide new and veteran instructor update training and instructor trainer workshops. Call one of them to schedule your next in-service training. It is important to keep the Bowhunter Education Instructors current with the latest information and techniques. A lot has changed in recent years. Please see the attached contact information for the Regional Coordinators. We are currently seeking IBEP Regional Coordinators in Regions 3 (upper mid-west states), 4 (southeast states), 8 (western Canada). Any experienced instructor interested in the volunteer position of Regional Coordinator living within one of these regions, please contact Tim Pool, NBEF Executive Director at [email protected] or 406.266.3237 for a Regional Coordinator Job Description.

The Deer and Black Bear targets are available at $110.00 each, five or more at $105.00 each and 10+ at $100.00. The Turkey is $65.00 each or $60.00 each for five or more. Prices do not include shipping. Order targets from the NBEF. Orders are drop-shipped directly from McKenzie.

BOWHUNTER EDUCATION SOON TO BE AVAILABLE ON INTERNET The knowledge portion of the course makes up about 75% of the total course. Anyone will be able to access the program via the NBEF website - www.nbef.org. Once they successfully complete the internet-delivered knowledge program, the student will be able to print a notice of completion. They then must contact a certified bowhunter education instructor to determine the schedule of an upcoming Bowhunter Education Field Exercise and present the notice of completion. The instructors conducting the Field Exercise will conduct the exercise, any examinations and jurisdiction-specific requirements. The internet students as with all students must successfully complete the Field Exercise before obtaining the official Bowhunter Education Certificate of Completion.

More information will be coming as the program progresses. We expect the IBEP Internet Delivered Program to be available by Spring, 2003.

IBEP EDUCATION VIDEO SERIES

The NBEF has produced 11 additional videos as support or better yet, a continuing education opportunity for students, instructors or hunters, in general to increase and enhance their knowledge of woodsmanship and hunting practices. The videos are not intended to be shown in their complete length in a hunter/bowhunter education class. Certainly segments could be shown to better illustrate a point or information.

Every video contains very good information on the title subject. For example; the Preparing To Survive video features Peter Kummerfeldt, Retired US Air Force Survival Trainer, Colorado Springs, CO. Mr. Kummerfeldt presents easy to follow and understand information necessary for the woodsman to be prepared to venture in the out of doors. It is 90 minutes long, but packed full of useful information including footwear, shelter building, fire starting, clothing, and much more.

NEW IBEP VIDEO - BOWHUNTING: Basics to Success!

The NBEF is working closely with the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks - Videography Unit to produce a replacement video for the very effective, but outdated Introduction to Bowhunting film/video produced by Alan Madison Productions. We thank Mr. Madison for his quality work and the effect it has had on the many thousands of hunter and bowhunter education students (and the many others) who have viewed the Introduction to Bowhunting video and absorbed its message.

The new video will project a theme that addresses current issues and will be an effective teaching tool for hunter education, 4-H, Scouting and other programs. The Bowhunting: Basics to Success! video is expected to be between 20-30 minutes in length and to be available Spring of 2003 for less than $20.00/copy.

BLOOD TRAIL MIXTURE - ADD HONEY The IBEP artificial blood mixture Blood Trails has been disappointing in the past by drying too fast and fading to a light pink. We have been experimenting with different additives to "fix" the mixture and only recently hit upon what looks like a good fix. Mix the Blood Trails artificial blood as directed on the package, then add 50% more honey or for 1 cup of mixed blood add ½ cup honey. We have tested it under different conditions and found that honey is a cheap and readily available additive to make the blood last and hold its color longer. Corn syrup also works, but just doesn't have the same effect as honey.

The Blood Trails artificial blood is only $5.00 for two packages of dry mixture. Each package creates 32 oz. of blood when mixed with water. With the addition of honey, it makes 48 oz.! We recommend using smaller portions of the mixed blood and adding the honey to this. The blood mix has an almost endless shelf live, we are not sure what adding honey will do to reducing the shelf life.

BACKSTOP NETTING FOR INDOOR ARCHERY SHOOTING

There are two primary suppliers of backstop netting for archery shooting - BCY, Inc. and Brownell & Co., Inc. Contact information:

BCY, Inc. Brownell & Co., Inc. Fibers Division 429 East Haddem-Moodus Rd. 50 McDermott Rd. Moodus, CT 06469 Tel: 203.787.7970 Tel: 860.873.1944 Fax: 203.787.7979 Fax: 860.873.1944 [email protected] [email protected] www.bcyfibers.com www.brownellco.com

It is important to note that archery backstop netting is only intended as a secondary form of protection. Target butts must still be used. The netting is most effective in stopping field tip and blunt arrows when hung loosely.

IBEP STUDENT MANUAL and INSTRUCTOR GUIDE - Revision in Spring 2003

The IBEP student manual is under revision to bring it up-to-date with current learning styles and readability levels. The new materials will have more photos and illustrations and will be written for easier reading. The new materials will be available April 2003.

IBEP GENESIS BOW PURCHASING PROGRAM

The Mathews Genesis Bow is an easy-to-pull, universal compound bow that is inexpensive and an excellent tool for working with the wide-range of people we enjoy at classes, fairs, schools, and archery shooting events. Check out the information on the Mathews Genesis Bow website at www.genesisbow.com. In general, the Genesis Bow pulls with an adjustable 10-20 pounds and has a draw length of 15-30 inches with zero let-off. The same bow is usable for children and adults! Since the NBEF is an educational non-profit foundation, bowhunter education instructors are eligible to purchase the Genesis Bow at a very special price of $99.00 ($106.80 each, includes shipping, or $103.80, includes shipping, for six or more bows.) By the way, the normal retail price for the Genesis Bow starts at $169.00.

The bows need to be ordered through the NBEF and are for educational purposes only. We will need to collect the fees and pay Mathews Genesis Bows directly at the time of the order. Credit card is the most convenient form of payment. To order the Genesis Bow contact us at Tel: 406.266.3237, Fax 266.3239, [email protected] or NBEF, 101 ½ North Front St., Townsend, MT 59644

This is a good deal! It takes about four days for the bows to be shipped from the Mathews factory.

END OF YEAR REPORTS

It is that time of year when the Regional Coordinators will be contacting each IBEP Chairman in order to obtain the past year's (July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2002) activity statistics. We are looking for the numbers of students certified, number of new instructors, number of current active instructors, number of in-service workshops for bowhunter education instructors, and any comments or suggestions as to how can the IBEP/NBEF do anything to help your jurisdiction's bowhunter education program. Please provide this information and email it to your Regional Coordinator by September 20. It would be a good time to schedule your in-service training! Select, copy and save the bottom part of this page. Complete it and send it to your Regional Coordinator.
