A lot of deer but it's mostly private property
Quality Deer living longer, less hunting pressure. Better food source. Quantity Deer number close to land capacity and food source capacity Deer management program to much politics lets talk deer
The quality of whitetail bucks over the past 15 years has increased dramatically. It started with the state antler restrictions and now an attitude of following QDMA. We'll see about cwd issues now.
mike n. (resident)
it seems to be getting better with the QDM program every year
Deer numbers are OK, but low in state forests I hunt. I don't usually shot the deer I see. I enjoy watching and taking pics. Disease and increased tags, may end my enjoyment of deer hunting.
people still shooting 18 month old deer and not allowing to age
SEEN A FEW SMALL BUCKS. SHOT A 7 POINT, GRANDSON GOT A 6 WIDE NOT MUCH MASS PEOPLE SHOOT EVERTHING THEY SEE WHERE WE ARE.
Seeing decent bucks and feel antler restrictions have really helped. I also think we should open up Sunday hunting for youth only. 18 and younger
johnny begood (resident)
getting better, keep Sunday hunting away, let them cry.
buck hunter (resident)
pretty good,let guys cry!
Robert Persichetti (resident)
Liked antler restrictions when they 1st came out, but after 10 yrs bad genetics started appearing more i'm for letting deer grow by technology restrictions and season lengths. herd is to small for ..
Kurt Engstrom (resident)
I am killing and seeing more big bucks than ever. I would like to see public land habitat managed differently with smaller logging cuts vs big expansive cuts.
Saw more deer this summer then EHD hit hard in Sept. In northern 2B.
Antler restrictions have placed protection on a large number of bucks that are not legal. Lots of large spikes and 4 points.
Deer herd coming back slowly. Less hunters today than years past for many reasons. Hope PGC can adapt to that responsibly.
Elwood Maurer (resident)
The quality of the bucks has much improved since antler restrictions have been implemented but the overall number of deer has decreased in the last few years.
Disappointing year with few quality bucks on game cameras and few sightings, despite many days afield.
I shot a nice buck, and a healthy doe, and saw lots of deer
Charles Kahley (resident)
Saw hardly any deer, no does at all . They bucks I saw were impressive . Overall good season , didn't use my doe tag , not enough deer in my area yet .
Low deer numbers and the quality of bucks is terrible considering antler restrictions have been in effect for more than 15 years.
pa bowhunter (resident)
I moved to Pa from Maryland 2yrs before the antler restrictions were imposed, the deer heard was small and the deer sizes smaller, it was uncommon to see deer over 2.5yrs old.
SAW MOSTLY SMALL BUCKS AND AN AVWERAGE NUMBER OF DOES
Jim Deibert (resident)
Ratio of hunters to deer....10 to 1
Curtis Yoder (resident)
Since the beginning of antler restrictions over a decade ago the quality of bucks has improved though the overall deer population has been reduced.
Ben Meckbach (resident)
Age class improving. Need second buck tag system that works for management and hunter
Mad Trapper (resident)
Archery season is a bit skewed for my liking. Overall use of antler restrictions improved buck quality and age structure of the herd. Biggest gripe is no Sunday hunting
Matt Holste (resident)
I saw one buck in archery and only a handful of doe. Ever since the pa game commission put in the dual buck and doe season it has killed off all of the deer outside of the major cities.
Cise hunderman (resident)
Public land is dead. Very few sightings of any deer and extremely young. Certain private spots have them and that's about it.
Fred hoke (resident)
They've decimated our Deer herd in the northern tier. Most of these sites such as this one propaganda machine for crackpot lobbyists that control our Game Commission
James Cawthern (resident)
Too many does harvested in too many special seasons i.e. early in-line muzzleloader, youth, senior, crossbow, etc. & too few deer on public land vs private land. Poor forest mgt for timber & resource
Not much to complain about. Would like to see a longer bow season though
Patrick Covert (resident)
I feel that the PGC is not doing a bad job, but could probably do better with our deer herd.
Vincent Aubrey (resident)
Harvest subpar bucks. Over kill of population in northern tier counties.
Antler restrictions are working. State records broken again this year. Rifle season needs reduced to 7-10 days. NEED SUNDAY HUNTING!
Chayce McIlwain (resident)
Honestly In my part of the state there aren’t many deer around, personally I think it’s the sad fact of poachers but theres nothing anyone can really do to stop it. The bucks are also very small.
James jr (resident)
The biggest problem with PA is the PGC and the hunters who influence it's management.
Matt ginithan (resident)
Over all numbers and quality of deer and antler size
Rob Hageter (resident)
Last 4 years have been great hunting in PA. I go to Ohio to get an opportunity at mature bucks. I took my vacation to stay here this year and killed my best PA. buck. Many more mature bucks in PA now.
Too many special seasons during the archery season. Youth and senior doe season with the overlap of turkey season makes it much more difficult to harvest legal (mature) bucks during bow season.
Alot of open public land and thus room for deer to hide, easily. Not a fan of the crossbow as part of a 6 week Archery season as I believe it has an impact on the number of bucks getting killed. I
Beau Morgan (resident)
Too many young bucks killed. Qdma is rarely used.
Tom Renninger (resident)
The game commissions deer program has led to much land being posted.
Jacob tumolo (resident)
The bucks are getting bigger since the PGC enacted new management laws, but are still issuing to many doe tags.
Danny Rusin (resident)
Solid bucks, but the state needs to look at how other states run their seasons. If you have your own land, not being able to take out bad generic bucks and only 1 or 2 doe is not good management.
Dave Leppo (nonresident)
Our camp took 4 nice bucks out of 6 hunters smallest spread was 17&3/4
Kevin H (resident)
Shot a nice buck on State Game Land. Saw couple nice bucks during archery season.
Cody Yankulic (nonresident)
There was decent bucks where I hunt, just didnt see them come rifle season. The quantity of deer was awful where I hunt but other parts of PA were good. Bucks are getting bigger, deer management A-
Kevin H (resident)
Shot a nice buck on State Game Land. Saw couple nice bucks during archery season.
Great state for bowhunter. Long season, high deer pop, multiple anterless tags, quality bucks.
Charlie Rehor (nonresident)
Private land for me!
Eric Hastings (resident)
Pretty good deer numbers. Lacking really big bucks. Game commison could do a better job at creating good habitat.
Jeremy Roth (resident)
Im not seeing anything
Dennis Mock (resident)
To many hunters! And using high power rifles get all the deer killed? Gun season should just be 1 week in my opinion!!!
Alec Smith (resident)
I saw a a couple of nice buck this year, but no monster bucks. I wish I would have seen more deer, but I still saw a decent amount of deer. And I like the way PA has their management program set up
Mike Wolfe (resident)
Deer numbers well below carrying capacity of land in many areas. Too many button bucks killed each year in 3 months of doe seasons / high nu.er of doe permits which greatly reduces mature bucks seen
Cole mccough (resident)
Good deer season
No Sunday hunting. Disparity between private and public is disgusting. To many anterless tags.
Jeff McCabe (resident)
Not all wildlife zones are created equal and ALL should be weighted independent of state-wide generalizations and not just those near PHL. More emphasis on attracting young hunters is required.
Buzz Deckard (nonresident)
No Sunday hunting that’s not good for people who work Saturdays
Still needs work but deer population seems to be on the rise. Saw more deer in the first two hours I have hunted than the last two years combined
Roy krow (resident)
You are definitely seeing better bucks in PA. This is a result of antler restrictions that have been in place for 15 years. The # and length of rifle doe season has been reduced.
Tristen Herndon (resident)
Deer are coming back, point restrictions helping
Noah Johnson (resident)
All answers are from what I have seen in the field
Randal Zeigler (resident)
Some nice buck taking but very lil an in 2 weeks I didn't see a deer an not for lack of trying in my area I walk over 5 miles a day an not a one
Ed Rogalski (resident)
I know PA has come a long ways. Our deer quality is the best it's been in 50 years. I done see as many deer as in the 80's but I still see deer. Forests are looking healthy for a change.
Jamie moyor (resident)
No Sunday hunting, to short of bow season. And to many special doe seasons.
Eric Shepley (resident)
Saw several buck during archery and rifle seasons but most were very young or of not good quality and the doe count was really low.
Seeing an abundance of quality bucks at the expense of seeing lesser numbers. I am all for it.
Tyler Reed (resident)
Seen more buck this year than doe in 1A. Out of all the buck I seen though 3 we're legal. Something needs too happen.
Tyler Reed (resident)
Daniel J Siciliano (resident)
2F area, ratio of buck to do 5:1, hardly any doe, anterless allocation and predators a problem
Thomas C Laub (resident)
Some parts of state maybe great but only the dedicated even see a deer in most of Mifflin county. Some good bucks though just not many
Seems like the best hunting is on private land. Don't bother with public any more. Habitat ect needs work. To many doe tags
Robert regal (resident)
Killed a nice 10 point with 19-1/2” spread and 2 drop tines rifle season
Best season my camp has had in 39 years! Plenty of deer and some dam nice bucks.
Closing archery season during tbe peak of the rut and no sunday hunting. Irt deer quality maybe in other parts of tbe state its ok, but where i live tbey are far and few.
Salvatore Giannino (nonresident)
Lots of deer, opportunities for mature deer, state does well but needs to look at more reasonable Doe management
The buck/doe ratio in the southeast part of the state is terribly out of balance. Doe hunting is great, but buck hunting continues to be a challenge. Buck quality was better 25 years ago in my area.
John Grim (resident)
Saw quite a few good bucks in 2 different units and many deer all together
Diamond Hunter (resident)
Pretty simple - the bucks weren't big and I didn't see many deer. So I question the State's management efforts.
Cooler Coleman (nonresident)
With the antler restrictions they have too many substandard bucks breeding. I've had a big spike on my farm in PA for the last five years that I can't get rid of.
Andrew Lenik (resident)
Piss poor management across the whole state tooo many doe tags, what the commision has done to the northern tier deer herd is irresponsible, need new deer managers
I love hunting my home state. Archery Season is Great, Rifle Season is Great and Flintlock Season is great. Plenty of quality deer in the agricultural areas which is where I hunt.
Brad Houser (resident)
PA needs to limit the crossbow season to two weeks for buck only.
Too many doe tags and too long of seasons in 2B - EHD/cars/hunters are taking way too many deer.
Piss poor deer management at the state level. The unit we primarily hunt is 2B, the season starts in early September and runs all the way through the end of January - there are virtually unlimited doe
Frank D (resident)
I hunt the Pocono mountains. It is pitiful what the Game Commission's Mgmt. plan has done to big woods hunting.
Pennsylvania has come a long way since AR's started in 2002. With the overall reduction in hunter numbers , increase bow/crossbow hunters and public ed., the quality of our bucks has really improved.
Eric Jones (resident)
Would like something’s regulation wise changed but other then that it was a good season
Erich Klein (resident)
Hunted since I'm 12 . Shot my best buck in 40 years
WV BOWMAN (nonresident)
I am thankful for PA antler restrictions protecting the yearlings! Never going to be Ohio using rifles over shotguns but PA has come a long way in 10 years. WV should take note. Need Sunday Hunting!!
Robert Epley Jr (resident)
Descent deer numbers.... big bucks are here fue to antler restriction. Need to cut doe tags to increase deer numbers. 2C PA
Rich Hollein (resident)
Ehd had an effect in 2b. Over hunting of doe also effected a herd already hurt by ehd. Would love to hunt other areas in state if Sunday hunting was open. One of 2 states that you can’t hunt Sunday’s!
With the Antler Restrictions we have, more bucks are reaching maturity than in previous years. We simply do not have the genetics for consistently huge deer, however. Deer numbers are healthy overall.
Chris moser (nonresident)
Need more zones.
Very few deer even fewer bucks
Mark hurley (resident)
Still money pushing agenda
Matt butler (resident)
Joe lim (resident)
The quality of bucks is down the last 3 years. Numerous scrub bucks taking over. Poor rifle season harvest this year. Archers are on the rise. When will this state allow Sunday hunting!
Matt Tarr (resident)
Quality of bucks i grade as A- thought here is that herd is improving by Trail cam evidence. I am responsible for not getting in front of better bucks. 3 bow kills. 2 doe and a buck.
Ronald SWARTZ (resident)
Sale way t many doe licence
Not enough antler less licenses allocated to high density areas.
Overall better buck quality , need to open up Sunday hunting.
Rut Nut (resident)
AR's good, but LOTS of hunters! Especially on public land.
fishin coyote (resident)
bucks are nice due to antler restrictions but AR should be a personal choice
EHD outbreak in our area killed a large percent of our herd, no reaction from game commision stating that it wasn't that bad so people would still buy doe tags
elk yinzer (resident)
Quality has come a long way in 20 yrs with reasonable expectations. Access within an hour of urban areas stinks. PGC should spend more $ on habitat. D for no Sunday hunting and short archery season.
Bill Obeid (resident)
Best rut I’ve seen in Pa. ever ! Mostly smaller bucks but maturity overall is improving. I saw 3 mature bucks . Pa. Hunters that don’t travel to other states would have been thrilled w my season
i think PA has come a long way.. Private ground is a huge piece of success as my numbers have increased drastically since finding better ground to hunt
tons of targets but few quality bucks. Huge acorn crop deff affected movement
Pat Lefemine (nonresident)
I think PA has done a tremendous job turning around a terrible deer program and taking a long-term approach to quality. I am amazed at the bucks I see in PA as of late.
