Frank and I headed up to the pine ridge this morning. It was slow.
We saw a few does, lots of pronghorn and a dozen bucks - too small to go after.
We headed back to camp for lunch then headed up to "Windmill Pasture"
to look for some bucks that were hanging around that area. Dale came with us.
We dropped him off at the ridge in case we spooked up a buck from below then
headed down to find those bucks.
After an hour of hard glassing, Frank and I found a single buck
bedded. We moved up the hillside to get a closer look and the buck, along with
4 other bigger bucks jumped and headed up a draw. We raced clear around the
other side and crawled up to the top to see where the bucks had gone - they
were right there below me at 40 yards! There were 4 small bucks (and one bruiser
that was P&Y caliber). I eased back and discussed the situation with Frank.
He wished me good luck and I began my stalk.

It took me an hour to crawl 70 yards but I pulled it off and soon was within
25 yards of the P&Y buck. The problem was that they were laying in the sage
(so was I) and he was surrounded by the other 4 bucks including a dink that
was facing me at 20 yards. All I could do is to wait it out and hope for a miracle
setup. I sat there for 90 minutes until the bucks stood up and began sparring.
It would have been an easy compound shot - the two bucks fighing were broadside
at 40 yards, but out of range for my longbow. They began to feed in the wrong
direction. Eventually they headed down the hill and bailed off into a cut bank.
I ran down to where I saw them enter the bank but they picked me off as I approached
them. My stalk was over.
Frank and I met up with Dale again and headed back to the Ridge.
It didn't take long to find deer. Two, huge, P&Y bucks were heading to water.
Dale got off just below the waterhole and downwind, I came from above and upwind.
We figured we could hit them from two directions and hopefully push them to
each other. Dale had a stalk but between a nosy pronghorn sending alarm snorts
up the valley, and a swirling wind, the bucks picked him off. I had lost the
bucks but miraculously bumped into them in the trees some time later. At one
point they were only 30 yards from me and after I put another sneak on them,
I got a little closer - but no shot at either time. It was an awesome day and
a great reminder of my hunt here from last
year!
Camp goes 100%
When you read the updates below, you will see that Todd, Jack and Steve
all got their antelope today. That means everyone on our Bowsite Y2K
group hunt got a pronghorn. More amazing is that with today's harvest,
every bowhunter this year got an antelope at Spearhead Ranch, a true 100%
success rate. If Dal, Steve, Dale and me get a mulie, then we will join
Sam, Todd and Jack by all being "tagged out" - it's only day
3 of our 8 day hunt and judging by the action - it just may be possible.
If you are interested in joining us next year on our Bowsite
group hunt, please contact Frank Moore at [email protected]
or me at [email protected],
space is limited so I suggest you book early.

No updated from Dale, he was whipped. In short, he saw a few deer early this morning while hunting in a tree for whitetail. For the afternoon hunt, he hunted with me (Pat) so see that story.

Leo and I spent a full day glassing the countryside. I made a stalk on a huge 4X4 muley only to be busted by a lone doe. It happens. Truth is, I’m up every morning at 3:30am and now it’s after 9:00pm and I just finished a beautiful meal of turkey and all the trimmings. My biggest problem is trying to get my tired mind to recall all that has happened today. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to talk about my buck.

Today was definitely exciting. Right at first light there were three bucks bedded in an open field. I immediately put the stalk on the bucks. I got within ten yards of the biggest buck, a three point, and came to full draw. Then a smaller buck caught my movement and they all bolted. The three point stopped broadside at thirty yards and gave me a great shot. I did not miss this time, my arrow flew true and hit its mark. The buck ran two hundred yards and curled up underneath some sagebrush. I stalked him one last time and got a finishing shot at twenty yards. I had my buck by 7:45am. They put me in the “gas chamber” blind at 9:30am for antelope. Ninety minutes later a nice antelope buck came in and gave me a fifteen yard broad side shoot. I took the shot. The arrow found its mark again. The buck ran for about six seconds and fell over dead. I was tagged out by 11:30am. The spearhead ranch is a great place to hunt. The hospitality, the hunting and the food is out of this world. I’m coming back next year and the next and so on. Thanks to everyone at the spearhead ranch.

Finally getting around to posting something. Monday was a good day for me in the Antelope blind. Saw six good bucks and seven does. Four of the bucks came into the blind. The best one of the lot didn’t allow a shot, however. Tuesday was not so good as the rain and cold change seemed to keep the antelope away. Today about noon a nice buck came in and provided me with a perfect shot. Have been enjoying the great food and hospitality. Looking forward to the Mule deer hunt. I’ve been able to get some great video footage and snapshots, which in itself has been worth the trip.

Today I went antelope hunting in a blind. I could not believe the activity around my blind. I saw at least six good antelope bucks within two hours. My buck came in about ten yards. I drew back and let my arrow fly. But it hit him a little far back. The buck acted like it was never hit. I was able to stalk within forty yards to put the final shot in him. It’s my first antelope. Awesome. Thanks to all the people at spearhead ranch. The food, the staff and guides are first class! I plan to come back again.
