Hunter Comments
I recommend this outfitter

In July 2013 I went on a water buffalo hunt with Simon Kyle-Little of Australian Big Game Safaris. The hunt was in the Walker River region of Arnhem Land, which is about as remote a place as you can be. Simon has a 2 million acre hunting concession there and, amazingly, has a very nice tent camp in the middle of nowhere. There is a flush toilet, hot shower, and real beds in the tents. The setting on the banks of the river is very beautiful. Simon guided me every day of the hunt, which was great. He showed me the various aiming points on the buffalo, which are quite different than those on animals I am used to hunting (moose, caribou, etc). He also showed me how to approach the buffalos, which are very alert and aggressive. This is rough terrain, and you have to be able to hike long distances in 80-90F temperatures. This was a management hunt which allowed me 1 non-trophy bull and 3 cows. We saw multiple buffalos every day, and I shot 1 additional non-trophy bull and a trophy bull, which accounted for the extra costs. I also saw 2 even bigger bulls, but didn't have a chance for a shot. Simon was amazing in his ability to spot buffalos. The area is a mix of thick brush and mudflats, and the animals are hard to see. You also almost never get an open shot, the only one I had was 250 yards over water. I brought my own rifle for the hunt (CZ .375 H&H), and I had no trouble at all with importing it into Australia. This was due to Simon's wife Elspeth, who put together all the permits in an organized package. Customs clearance in Brisbane took no more than 10 minutes. Elspeth had things so well organized that when the final bush plane left me off on a dirt runway near the river, Simon was waiting for me. All in all, the best hunt I have ever been on. A final tip from Simon: Swift A-frames work great on buffalos.
