Southern Arrowhead Outfitters, www.southernarrowheadoutfitters.com, operated by Trevor Fitzgerald, does free chase over bait pig hunts just east of lake Okeechobee in central Florida. He takes 10 hunters at a time one weekend per month. Cost is $325 which includes 2 hogs and lodging.

I took one 120lb boar about 1 yr old. Saw 3 more in the 110-120 range, but couldn't see the pins by then. Two more in the 40-60 lb range were taken. Among the nine hunters present there were three hogs taken plus one wounded and one miss.

1) Quantity of Game - Talking to Trevor's dad before the hunt he represented a 110% shot opportunity and 80% success rate. I didn't keep track of all nine hunters, but I would say closer to 66% shot opportunity and that is if one was willing to shoot 40-60 lb hogs. Success rate was 33%. Of course, some people were incapable of shooting broadheads well.

2) Quality of Game - As mentioned previously, I saw 4 nice hogs. Some other nice hogs were seen, but many were in the 40-60lb range.

3) Guide's Competence - Ran the schedule/operation well. We had one disabled hunter in a wheel chair. Trevor took great pains to accomodate him. Gave advice when asked.

4) Guide's hunting ethics - No problems noted.

5) Condition of equipment - ATV, hunter transport trailer and swamp buggy very good. Skinning set up very good. Ladder stands in good condition, but at least 33% of us felt they were way short on concealment. I felt like a black bird sitting on a dead tree limb. Disabled hunter used ground blind and harvested one hog. Feeders worked well.

6) Food - We provided our own meals.

7) Accommodations - There is a house available with bunks and full kitchen including microwave and gas grill. My recommendation - if you hunt here bring a travel trailer or stay in Okeechobee and drive back and forth.

8) Trophy Care - No trophys taken.

9) Meat care - I was unsure of process to avoid male urine glands and Trevor helped me with skinning and quartering without charge.

I was specifically looking for a fair chase hunt without dogs. I drove 14 hours from VA just for that. I was lucky enough to be successful. I saw a LOT of game from my treestand including quail, dove, armadillos, hogs, deer, turkeys, rabbits and one little 5 lb hog with stripes who must have been an outcast runt (very cute though). Got a lot of good pictures. Do I recommend Southern Arrowhead Outfitters? Considering the price and the style of hunting - yes.
