First the easy stuff. The food was good and there was plenty of it..in fact too much if we were not bear hunting we were eating. The bed and breakfast we stayed in was great. The beds were comfortable and our host was gracious and always ready to serve breakfast and talk about bear hunting. The size of bear in this area is exceptional. On camera there were four bears over 400 pounds the week we stayed. Now what makes the outfitter Lloyd Gates an exceptional outfitter... Lloyd is a hard working honest outfitter that will do whatever it takes to harvest bear. We arrived in camp on Sunday, baited all the sites, pulled the trail camera cards and than went back to Lloyd's to view the bait sites and decided on a game plan for Monday's bear hunt. During our week long stay, we had several bears on the baits in the 400 pounds plus range. The trail cameras are an invaluable tool and just takes his service to the next level. This is not your usual bear hunt..where as you are out at the baits at 2pm and back at 8pm. You could hunt all day and we did. We let the cameras tell us what time to hunt. Lloyd runs a small camp with a small number of hunters in camp and personal attention was important to him and to us. Also, there were no hidden fees in the outfitters cost. We arrived on Sunday and left on the following Sunday and did not spend one cent other than his initial fee. My buddy and I hunted the bigger black bear until Thursday evening but the big black bears would not cooperate. We decided to move bait sites and on Saturday night both of us connected with a bear. I shot a 300 pound black bear weighed on a scale not a guess from the outfitter. Lloyd Gates skinned black bear until 3:30AM on Sunday so we could return home with our trophies. This guy just did not quit! If you are looking to go black bear hunting in the Northeast with the possibility of big black bear, this outfitting service is for you. Mike and Tom are great guys to have in camp. We had alot of laughs. They seen several bears including a B&C bear, Mike's first night. As an Outfitter, I do what I have to do to get my clients a bear. Mike and Tom also put 100% effort into their hunt. When Trail cameras showed 7:00 am bears, they were more than willing to get up at 4:00 am to go morning hunting. We are looking forward to hunting with Mike and Tom again. Glad you had a great hunt. See you next year.
