I do not recommend this outfitter

The guide was okay. The problem was the owner/outfitter Karl Johannson, who is one of the lowest forms of life on the planet. My first clue about him was on arriving in far north Alberta where he insisted on cash up front, and wouldnt take a check. He stated he had been burned with someone cancelling a check after a hunt. I now know why. I scrambled to go to a bank and get cash for him on the day of the hunt. Due to a bank screw up in currency exchange, I unknowingly overpaid him by over 300 dollars. During the hunt my partner got a small moose in what was supposed to be a trophy fly in hunt. No other moose sighted in 8 days - although I did manage to shoot a wolf on the caracss of my partner's kill. On arrival back to base, Karl took my wolf skull, and agreed to get CITES paperwork done and send it to me, and to send me a check for the overage money he owed me. He has done neither. I have confronted him in sportsmans shows on several occasions in Portland and Seattle, all I want is my $300 and my skull, but in response he gets a sick twisted smile on his face and a lizard like glint in his eye. The man is pure reptile. H genuinely likes to screw people. All I would say to others considering booking with him is this - dont take my word for it - study the face of this man before you book with him. I didnt like what I saw when I met him, and if I had paid attention to my instincts I wouldnt have booked. A man that is rotten in his soul is one you can sense a mile away.

Was the outfitter notified of problems? - YES

Outfitter's Response
Disagree

Matt Travis and his hunting partner Roger H. Squirrell came for a moosehunt in the fall of 2005. Matt was informed before the hunt that I don't take personal cheques and still he gives me one for the final payment. This is now where all the problem started with Mr Matt Travis. He was so determined to give me a personal cheque and I knew now his intentions. So if Matt wanted to hunt he had to get cash so he went to the Bank. I am always paid in US$ and to my knowledge Matt got Canadian $. and paid me in Canadian $. What the exchange rate was back in 2005 I don't recall. In regards to the wolf skull he is mentioning I don't know what happened to it (I don't have it). Matt told me he would take it with him. I told him he couldn't because he needs a sites permit. Matt didn't care about that. He took it with him. FYI - on this trip Matt shot a big bear and a wolf. Roger shot a moose and wolf. Matt and Roger have been friends for 25 years. After this trip Roger doesn't want to have anything to do with Matt. For more info what happened in camp please call Roger Squirrell- Seattle, Washington, Phone 206 363-1549.

Windy much of the hunt. We were holed up in the tent 5 of the 8 days because we couldnt take the canoe out. But again, my issue isnt the lack of moose sitings.
