We enjoyed another trip to northwest Alberta with Derrel Johnson. Four hunters killed 5 bears. Two hunters tagged out, I killed a beautiful black that unfortunately (for the bear) was adorned with a striking white "V".
One bear missed Pope and Young by 3/4 of an inch. Another large cinnamon was killed on the 5th night. Great bear but probably missed Pope as well.
On the 4th evening, I had an arrow deflect on a Popey blonde bear. By great fortune, the bad shot only nicked the bear so he will live to haunt me for a few more years. Given we surmised the hit to be a low grade wound, I spent the remaining days of the hunt waiting for him to return. Big wilderness bears can be surprisingly bold but for this bear, he offered no second chances.
We were spoiled again by great camp food. Moose was a staple ingredient and we all thanked God for it. A man hasn't lived until he gets to eat moose meat pie.
The weather soured things a bit as we had 2 days of snow and high wind. As a result, the usual bear sightings were down from the norm. Still, it was a phenomenal bear hunt and I was but one overlooked twig away from the brass ring of black bear hunting. Thank you Derrel, Wendy, Tamarra and Bob for another top notch hunt.
Thanks again Randy for your kind words. The crew up here has come to think of you guys more as family than a group of bear hunters.Good news as I told you in my pm old swampy is still running the swamp (just with a slight limp)Ill fatten him up and maybe do a little brush trimming on the swamp bait.Take care D
High winds and snow hampered bear movement on 2 evenings.
