Outfitter's Response
Disagree

I will choose my words carefully in this response, because I want to help hunters avoid being disappointed when they go on a hunt, even if it is with someone else.

It is hard to believe that clients will look you right in the eye, and tell you that they are willing to sit in a stand and take a chance on killing a giant buck when they are in camp, and then leave and complain somewhere else because they did not see that deer on a three day gun hunt. This should never happen!

We ask our hunters what they are seeing, and offer them options that we feel might improve their chances of killing a deer on a daily basis. The client has to tell us something besides, "I don't want to move", in order for us to work with them. The problem is communication, plain and simple!

The property this hunter was on was scouted, and some very good deer were seen in the days just before he arrived. There are numerous rubs on large diameter trees in a line which leads right past several stand sites. These rubs were made just before he arrived. I even described two different bucks, which we had spotted there, and he agreed to hunt them. He was escorted to the stand by a personal friend, who had set the stand, and seen the deer he would be hunting. The stand was lowered, before daylight, because he was not used to hunting at the height we had it set at. He was told that there were options (other stand sites, and the offer of a ground blind). He declined our offer to move him on two successive days, and so did his partner on the hunt, who was offered the same options. They left The Quail Shed without ever saying anything to me about being disappointed with the hunt.

The problem is not the property. We just had another hunter, Kirk Ebarb from Shreveport, LA, there last weekend on a bowhunt. He saw seven bucks, including a 160 class 8 point and two 140 class deer, which where a little too far away. He videoed them, and said, "If I had only been on a gun hunt!"

We are not a large outfit, and I realize we cannot please everyone. However, we try. The outfitting business is tough, and the power of the Internet is phenomenal, so we respect the good and bad side of publicity. For that reason, we must respond to these negative reviews. I do not think finger pointing resolves anything, but the facts have to be told. Mike's review is his opinion, but it is very brief. The truth lies in the details.

I just wish hunters would treat us as fairly as we treat them, and base their expectations on reality. On any given day, you might see a world class deer from any of our stands. But, it does not happen every day! We do not have a high fence, and you buy a hunt, not a deer!

If you are considering a hunt at The Quail Shed, please read the other reviews on this website, and others on the Internet. If we sound like the outfit you want to hunt with, call me. I will do everything I legally can to provide a great hunt.
