GOLDEN STATE BOWHUNTERS

A CHAPTER OF SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL

WHO ARE WE?

We are a state-wide Chapter of Safari Club International, dedicated to conservation and protection of wildlife and habitat and the vital role of bowhunters in that concern.

WHY SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL (SCI)?

In 1971 an organization was founded in Nevada with a mission to form a global network of dedicated hunters who would take an active role in conservation, education and hunter protection. This local representation of a global hunting community has developed into one of the largest hunting organizations in the world. It is the very strength of local participation that provides a network of individual members and chapters with an international legacy of conservation and hunter protection.

It is the organization of these efforts that provide a foundation for local individuals to participate on a scale that simply could not be achieved otherwise. And that is the very strength of SCI. LOCAL hunters, LOCAL concerns, and LOCAL participation. We have formed a Chapter of SCI, extending to our membership, the strength and benefits that this Club can offer. SCI is also a leader in legislative activities and protection of the hunter. Once again, with SCI as the hub of the wheel, we can better accomplish our goals, carry more weight, and tap into an established resource to further the role that bowhunters play in responsible wildlife management and habitat conservation.

With over 184 chapters world-wide, we enjoy the fellowship of bowhunters throughout the world. SCI's annual conventions bring together thousands of members, guides, outfitters and others to help raise funds that are vital to our conservation and legislative efforts.

THE ROLE OF THE LOCAL CHAPTER

The emphasis here is LOCAL. That is our strength and foundation. We address the issues that touch our daily lives. We raise funds that focus on our immediate concerns in our own wildlife, resource-use and legislative issues. We aid conservation by publishing a newsletter, organizing information on the local level, and participating in community and state-wide projects. We also reach out to those in our global community, realizing that protection of all resource concerns are world-wide responsibilities.

We are a group of dedicated individuals committed to the spirit and interest of our Chapter. We have pledged to work together to further the interest of those who bowhunt, to work for the conservation of wildlife and habitat, and to further legislation for that purpose.

Our chapter holds fund-raising events and we fund worthy projects that involve both hunting and community projects. We are required to fund both conservation and education projects, and have several programs from SCI and also local efforts that we support.

SCI PROJECTS: THE HUB OF THE WHEEL

The following outline briefly describes some of the projects which SCI is involved in:

APPRENTICE HUNTER PROGRAM: Hands-on teaching course where youths and adults can learn all aspects of being an well-skilled, ethical sportsman.

SAFARICARE: A volunteer humanitarian health care outreach program designed to bring much-needed health care services to people living in remote corners of the world.

SENSORY SAFARI: By utilizing mounted wild-life specimens, tape recordings of the sounds of animals, sightless and vision-impaired individuals are given the opportunity to touch and "see" real animals with their hands. Interpretive guides (Chapter volunteers) inform the participants about the animal species group, distribution, physical traits and habits. For many, it is their first opportunity to gain a visual perspective of what animals are like.

SPORTSMEN AGAINST HUNGER: Assists the needy and help feed the homeless. Hunters are encouraged to voluntarily donate a part of their annual wild game harvest to help feed the needy. The Chapter pays for their meat donations to be professionally processed and distributes this to food banks and other charitable organizations. ANNUALLY, more than 200 TONS of game meat are donated by the Safari Club Chapters through this network.

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS: This program is involved in a wide variety of issues affecting wildlife and the hunting tradition. With offices near Washington, D.C., staff work with lawmakers and natural resource agencies at state, federal and international levels to protect the rights of hunters. This committee also interacts with other conservation organizations. This program also monitors legislation and alerts members of threats to the hunting tradition.

AMERICAN WILDERNESS LEADERSHIP SCHOOL: Maintaining that education of young people and teachers is the key to conservation of wildlife, It is unique as an environmental education program that is sponsored by a hunting and conservation organization. This program has expanded to provide teacher/educator workshops, high-school student sessions (this age group was chosen because such students can be exposed to conservation-related vocational opportunities and because young adults of this age are beginning to become involved in school and community affairs), elder-hostel groups for seniors, hunters clinics, and Becoming An Outdoors Woman sessions.

BOOKS FOR AFRICA: Chapters facilitate gathering the many thousands of pounds of school books that are annually destroyed by the American school system as out-dated and shipped to Africa. Volunteers help pack and pay for the shipping overseas where the group CAMPFIRE provides distribution to children in Zimbabwe.

Chapter's participate in any one of the above projects as well as a myriad of local projects by raising funds and providing volunteer hours. Local children's projects, food-banks, orphanages, zoos, wildlife organizations, Department of Fish and Game, habitat projects, environmental issues and concerns are addressed in our own community by Chapter funding and involvement.
