I have 1/2 acre of beans that I want to throw brassica seed into when the leaves turn yellow. Is there one seed or a blend of seeds that will work in this WI situation?

Now is the time to broadcast winter rye seed and it will grow about on any kind of soil...

Rye all day long! Do it as the leaves begin to change.

Planted rye for the first time last year. Came in fast and strong. Winter months had deer in t very day. Spring and summer the turkeys loved it. I just cut it and was amazed at how many deer beds were in it. Checked to see if the seed was dispersing well from the cutting and was pleasantly surprised at how much and how well it was scattered about. Hoping for one more year from it, then will kill it and plant something else. I will definitely be using it on a regular basis, from one field to another.

I usually mix winter rye with wheat in situations like this. They're both close but depending on winter temps and soil nutrients one will be strong when the other isn't. Plus I've found deer to vastly prefer wheat over rye. But, as a disclaimer deer on my place won't touch a turnip even though everyone swears they are the cats meow.

I broadcast brassicas into beans about July 20th (central MN) with varying degrees of success depending upon how strains of a stand I’m broadcasting into. If E fenced (and a strong stand) I might get 10-20% germination. If not E fenced and heavily browsed, it might be 30-40% germination.
Then about September 5 and 12th (varies the growth stages) Ill oversees the four cereals into the same stand to add diversity.

Obviously, a rain or two or three is needed to create germination

I used to plant wheat only, deer loved it. I started a couple years ago planting rye, since it’s the only thing available to them, they love it too. Kinda like being in jail, you eat what they give you or you go hungry.
