This deer was cementum aged recently.

Take a guess at how old he was. I'll post his age Sun.

I'm posting pics from photo bucket and dont remember exactly how to do it so bear with me if it takes a couple try's.

7.5-8.5- NICE! Bill

Date:06-Aug-10

Story?

Date:06-Aug-10

Looks like he is well past his prime. I'd say at least 8.5 based on all that mass, but I am really thinking 10.5 years.

Date:06-Aug-10

How did he get him with a bow? From the pictures if he used his portable tree stand he would have had to bring his own tree.

Date:06-Aug-10

He's an ancient deer. I'd say at least 7.5, but most likely older!

Date:06-Aug-10

Two and a half. Those Chernobyl bucks will fool ya.This is the rainforest right outside the plant.

Date:06-Aug-10

Old enough.

6.5

Date:07-Aug-10

That has to be on the Colorado border. Oh yeah,8.5

Date:07-Aug-10

10.5 he's a beast too!

Date:07-Aug-10

He was born withinn 10,000 years following the Jurassic period. HEHEHE nice deer for sure, even if he is prehistoric. Have a full body mount done and donate it to a Natural History Museum.

Date:07-Aug-10

WTH??? ...is that West Kansas?

By: dg72A
Date:07-Aug-10

I'd say he's around 9 1/2 yrs old.

Date:07-Aug-10

Just for the sake of discussion I'll post his age today instead of tomorrow.

The lab results stated that the tooth was a perfect specimen and the results are accurate to +/- 0. This means his age is exact.

3.5 yrs. old.

Gotta wonder what this deer could've become....

Gotta wonder WTH else is out there...

Date:07-Aug-10

Should have let him grow :)

Date:07-Aug-10

lol at one elk that buck is a shooter in my book anywhere there are whitetail deer

Date:07-Aug-10

That is a little surprising as most bucks beam length leads mass except when they are starting to go down then the beams shorten and mass is greater.

I would defintely say that buck is 4 1/2 or greater.

What a trophy out is that open country!

Date:07-Aug-10

That is hard to believe. I don't think many old buck hunters would pass on that beast. Any pics of the jawbone?

Date:07-Aug-10

Did you have the tooth aged in New Jersey?......(just curious)

Date:07-Aug-10

Sorry I do not accept that age. Must have been a mixup somewhere.

We had a deer aged by rings and it came back at 3-1/2. That deer scored 228+. The only problem is we had sheds from at least four years and the first ones were not his first rack either.

We had aged this deer at 6-1/2.

I will try to find some pictures.

Here is a picture of the buck mentioned in my previous post.

Date:07-Aug-10

Yeah, they switched the tooth with another, no fricken way. Base circ's, throwing junk, mass, apparent grey on face....

Bill

Date:07-Aug-10

If that buck was 3-1/2 years old, I'm a strapping 24 year old. You got some bad info back from the lab.

GG

Date:07-Aug-10

Hey, I'm with ya's. It is what it is.

My taxi commented on the condition of this bucks teeth when I 1st brought him in. His teeth were in surprisingly good condition and suggested he may be younger thans he looks. This is why they were sent in.

Date:07-Aug-10

I'm a physician, and occasionally we will get lab reprots that don't make sense ... the quick answer is "Run the test again."

Lab errors happen. Samples get mislabeled. Human error occurs.

When puzzled by the possibilties between:

1. Bizarre freaks of nature, and

2. Human incompetence

Pick the more common one. (That's #2 for those of you who aren't sure.)

Just for the sake of argument the Rath buck from Minnesota was aged at 3.5 too.

I'm the taxidermist who's working on this deer and I must admit that when Jim brought this deer to me my first thought was "What a fossil!" The next day when I caped him out I could not believe how the teeth had no wear at all, I mean none! If you looked at the teeth and never saw the rack you'd guess him to be a two year old, but that can't be possible. So I guess i'm really not too surprised that after being cementum aged he came back as a 3 1/2. On another note these pictures don't do this animal justice, he's a pig, I mean a slob! I would guess that just the rack alone weighs between 9 and 10 pounds. How ever old this buck is he's a true trophy. Maybe I'm just jealous my tag isn't on him.

Date:07-Aug-10

Do you have pictures of the jaw and teeth?

Date:07-Aug-10

Sunsignarcher, very nice no matter what his age. Just interested, how much did he weigh?

Date:07-Aug-10

Perhaps the lack of wear on his teeth had to do with his feed in those grasslands.

"Perhaps the lack of wear on his teeth had to do with his feed in those grasslands."

That's exactly what I was thinking... sure looks older!

Date:08-Aug-10

Guess he had a rough life...lol

I guess it's like when someone looks 65 but is actually 40.

Date:08-Aug-10

He probably had 2 girlfriends! Just one wife is dragging me into old age, so imagine what 2 would do!

,michael

Date:08-Aug-10

I can see about getting pictures of the jaw n teeth.

Didn't get a chance to weigh this deer.

Date:08-Aug-10

When I cam on this thread before I even saw the deer the number I had in my head was 3 1/2. There is only one realistic way to tell a deer's age and that is with cementum aging like what was used. All this "he has gray nostril hair" or "Joe saw a sway in his back" or the antlers do this or that is just unsubstantiated conjecture and Wild A$$ Guesses.

I therefore call "Poppy-cock" on all the arm chair experts trying to age a deer by a photo here on BS, I say BS!

Date:09-Aug-10

I'm thinking 65 million; maybe 70.

Date:10-Aug-10

that deer is 7 plus it is all about what they eat down where I hunt and guide the main food source is pecans so there wear is real bad.

Date:11-Feb-19

Bringing back an old thread because this buck is my favorite deer of all time...

Date:11-Feb-19

I like Steve H. reply above. Kind of how I feel when people start guessing by just looking at the deers body, jaw, or antlers. All guessing.

Date:11-Feb-19

From what I've read, cemmentum annuli aging is only about 10% more accurate than jawbone (tooth wear) aging on KNOWN AGE deer. Jawbone aging was 50 something percent in the same study. So, age your deer on the hoof and drop the string......or not.

By: APauls
Date:11-Feb-19

Sometimes the tells just aren't tells. People take a look at me and think I'm 40 but I'm hardly over 30! lol

Date:11-Feb-19

It's your bald head, Adam. Time for a rug. :)

By: t-roy
Date:11-Feb-19

I get just the opposite of that, APauls. People always guess me for younger than I actually am.

I think it might be because I’m very immature for my age.

No clue on the buck’s age, but he sure does have a thick neck.

Date:11-Feb-19

T-Roy funny how that works, people always peg my age perfectly. Could be because I’m balding and immature??

Date:12-Feb-19

I think he's from the Precambrian.

Date:12-Feb-19

I hunted one almost identical to that in Ks. He showed up the same day, same place, two years in a row. That's why culling is stupid. Those bucks usually end up heavy and often grow sticker points.

Date:12-Feb-19

The deer's nose isn't as white as I'd expect and he doesn't have that thick forehead patch of fur that I'm used to seeing on old bucks in Illinois. Id guess him to be 6-6.5years old.
