Shooting Traditional Bows with the Pros

Question I shoot a Great Plains one piece recurve that is 58# @ 28 inch draw with fast flight strings. I am trying to get some arrows that have the correct spine and i am a little confused and could use some help. Its my understanding from all the research i have done that when using fast flight strings you need to add approx 15#'s for wood arrows and up the weight for some on aluminum arrows. Does this rule also apply to carbon arrows since that is what i intend to use? I will be using these for both 3-D shoots and hunting. I greatly appreciate any help & clarification you might provide.

Answer
The neat thing about carbon arrows is that they have a fairly large spine or draw weight range. Typically the weight ranges are marked on the shaft 30-60 or 40-70 and so on.

But as you know the dynamic spine is what you are looking at. What point weight are you using, actual arrow length, what string material, nock fit, brace height. I would suggest you choose an arrow that approximates your draw weight pick up a few arrows and give them a try.

If they group well for you that is your arrow. Don't be afraid to try an arrow that is a little bit stiffer and even the arrows that are spined a little weaker. In the end you will find an arrow that fits.

Question just purchase a Ben Pearson Hunter Model 7458; 5749-683 58" 45/50@28". I need to know the brace height and suggeted string lenght and strands.

Answer
I'd buy a string that is 56.5 inches long. You may need to twist it up a bit to get a brace around 7 inches to 7.5 inches. Find the brace where the bow makes less noise.

Question i found a old long bow at my grandfathers house but it has no string so i wandering how should i go about getting a string for it the bow is 60" long any info would help thanks.

Answer
If you measure the bow from string groove to string groove and it is 60" long you should subtract about 3.5 inches from the length to get the actual string length for that bow. When you get the bow you can twist up the string to find your ideal brace height.

Many custom stringmakers are good sources for getting the proper length string on your bow.

Question How do I fix the slight twist in my Howard Hill Recurve. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. The bow means alot to me.

Answer
I'll pick up bows from yard sales that have a twist in the limb. I can usually correct the problem with the hot water treatment. I use a wax pencil and mark an arrow the direction I want to twist the limb back to center.

I'll turn the tap to hot and run the limb under the hot water and heat the limb through and through. Then take hold of the limb and twist it in the direction you want it to move. While still twisting it run it under cold water. Dry the limb off and string up the bow and see if you corrected the limb.

If the limb still shows twist repeat the heat twist cold process with a bit more twist.

Question I shoot longbow that seems to have a genealogy problem. According to Archery Supplies up at Canberra, Australia, it is a Cartel Longbow. According to another archery dealer, it is a Samick Longbow. When I look at the lowerlimb, there is a signature that reads like 'Dwyer Longbow', but the Dwyer company in the US says it is not one of theirs. It is 69", draws 50# at 28" and shoots both aluminiums and 5/16" POC shafts equally well. I like the bow, but I don't know who makde it. Has anyone come across such a bow? I'd appreciate any comments or experiences with it. Thanks

Answer
Hi Glenn, your bow sounds like it has many names associated with it. I do not know what the story is on your bow, but some bows are outsourced by certain companies and then labeled with the distributors name.

I wonder if that is the case with your bow. Nonetheless it sounds like it shoots the arrows well.
