Day 2

Frank and I left the ranch early and headed up to his cousin Jimmies' ranch forty minutes away. We ridge ran for a quarter mile when we heard a bugle and worked our way up towards the bull. It took us a while to get to him but before long we were setup and ready to call. I bugled first and the bull immediately responded, Frank took over from there. The bull bugled pretty good but hung up a hundred yards away. We moved closer and the bull became more aggressive. I quietly set up across a meadow and sat down just as the bull stepped out. He was really big, a 6x6 that would go low to mid 300's. We tried every trick in the book but just couldn't draw him out of the trees. The bull eventually walked off.

Frank walked up to me and while we were whispering I caught the movement of a cow bedding down about 90 yards away. The wind was good and having the cows bedded down meant that the bull was probably around too. So Frank and I decided to camp on the elk and spend the entire day watching that cow. Somewhere after two I leaned forward to check on her and she was gone. We waited until 5:00 PM and then set up close to where the cow was last seen. Frank bugled first. No response. He tried again and the second time the bull responded - he was still there! We kept bugling, sometimes I would bugle in response to Frank's bugle which fired up the bull. He started to come in. I could hear him walking and when he bugled it as deafening. I couldn't see him through the pines but he was probably 40-50 yards. Then a wind swirled and brought my scent to him - I caught a brief glimpse of him running away through the trees. It was a great day and a great effort on this big bull.

I spent the afternoon in the Upper Stable blind, but after such a heavy rain last night I was afraid nothing would come to water – and it didn’t. Maybe tomorrow… Dal

Well it was a successful day. I stalked up on a group of five bucks and got a perfect opportunity at a forty-yard broad side shot. My arrow flew true and the deer fell no more than eighty yards away. This buck was the biggest of the group he was a 5 x 4 or a 4 x 3 with eye guards. I got within range of a nice antelope and miss-judged the distance - the arrow fell short. There are so many antelope in this country it's unreal. Everywhere you turn there is another buck antelope. So I know I’ll have plenty of opportunity’s for stalks and shots. Hey honey, have’n a good time see you in a few days. Eric you better practice for eastern wash. (note - we'll post his deer picture tomorrow).

In consideration of yesterday’s monsoon, I opted to hunt deer with our guide, Parker and fellow hunter, Bill. Well, to say that we were into deer all day would be an understatement. Numerous whitetails as well as mulies were sighted…some of which were absolutely enormous. Very cool! A particularly unwary bachelor group finally tempted us into orchestrating an ambush late this evening. I took a position in the bottom of a small draw and waited for Parker to drive the truck to the top of the hill in hopes that the deer would slowly come my way.
To make a long story short, a group of rouge antelope somehow decided to assist the cause of the deer and ran down the draw ahead of the group. This concerned the deer enough to likewise pick up the pace. When they came by me at only 30 yds, they simply would not stop…and so I did not shoot. Fortunately, however, Todd was able to take one of these dandy bucks on a subsequent set up within the hour. All was avenged! I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but I’ll keep you informed.

Another fun day with our guide Leo and my fellow hunter Todd. While Todd got multiple opportunities at bucks and antelope my only one came late in the day. It was the 5 bucks left after Todd blasted the biggest of the 6 bucks that Claudia’s crew sent our way. The 5 of them sauntered around a hill so I tried running over the top of the hill to beat them. I was not fast enough to get into the position I was trying for but I dove down to the cover of the sagebrush on a hillside hoping to have them first not see me, then second come my way. The first wish was true for the first 3 bucks. Yes, the 4th and 5th saw me but it was after the 3 had moved away. In other words, they were not headed my way. I sat as low as I could and watched as one thought about coming closer. As that thought was not to be, I pulled back and let one sail at the 4th and largest deer. He was broadside at 30 yards. Well, that is what I thought. As my arrow buried itself in the hillside at the bucks feet, I am of the thought that he was at 35 yards. Well, there is always tomorrow. I have faith that Leo will put me on a nice mulie then it will be on to antelope.

With approximately one hundred fifty square miles of property, I was able to hunt out of a blind, which didn’t get too much rain yesterday. The sun was out all day long, which I hoped would bring a thirsty antelope to my water hole. I did see a total of seven antelope throughout the day, but the closest any of them got to me was about two hundred yards. Then, about a half hour before dark, four mule deer does came in to drink. Tomorrow, the weather is supposed to be sunny again, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Oh yeah, I forgot to explain we had a powerful lightening storm as I exited my stand last night. So, with all the rain we had there were no hunts from the blinds today. It was all stalks thru draws and around cut banks. I can’t tell you how much fun and how much walking I did today. Yes, these are new terms for me being from Connecticut. I was able to have a short stalk on 3 mulies. What a rush!! As big as they are, they are ever so swift on their hoofs. Something. Not me, spooked one of them and it was all over..for today. Again, the landscape is outstanding, as is the food and the company.

Antelope Pic
Good news! Dave and I got up first thing in the morning and went down by “#1” and did a little searching via binoculars and spotted my antelope right where he bedded down last night. We drove right up to him; field dressed him and hauled him to camp. Later in the day Dave and I went up to some higher country to try our luck with Elk and maybe a mule deer, no luck on those but I did get some close up pictures of a badger and a porcupine. A great day to say the least.
