I'm the camera man today as Dan Bertalan attempts to put a Booner in
the books.
The morning started with a short boat ride to the west end of the lake,
as Dionn got a hot tip that there was a herd of huge bulls using a known
funnel. Sure enough, we found lots of fresh sign. After a couple exploratory
setups, we finally worked our way to the convergent trail and it was indeed
a funnel. The trail looked like a D-11 Caterpillar had gouged it's way
through. But it wasn't long until we saw the real trail blazers -- hundreds
of caribou -- and there was some very large bulls in this bunch.
After passing on a quite a few shot opts, Dan took a book bull at 10,
12 yds. Double lunged, he ran off and went down within 50, 60 yds.
As we were waiting, timidly celebrating Dan's shot, not 50 yards behind
us came a herd of huge bulls, one of them was world class. Had Dan passed
on his bull, the Booner would have probably taken the same trail. But
the bulls milled around until some alarmed cows spooked them and they
scattered.
Dan and Dionn with Dan's first bull of this hunt. Three days, three big
bulls. Wonder what tomorrow will bring!
