Day 5

November 13th

Morning Hunt

It's day 5 and we're in the home stretch. I wanted to hunt a place that has a lot of does so Clay Jarnagin and I thought the Junkyard was a good option. Weather had changed and it was expected to be 20-30mph winds with 40 gusts. Yuck. It was cold this morning so I hoped for the best. Unfortunately it was very slow. I only saw one buck (below) that was not a shooter. I stayed until lunch and thought hard about my afternoon hunt. We would decide after lunch.

The only buck I saw this morning. Not a shooter.

Afternoon Hunt

I decided to go back to Larry's creek where I came so close yesterday on a 170. I thought that maybe with the winds, and all of the cedars they would be cruising the creek. Unfortunately, the deer did not cooperate. I saw a spike and a few does. It has been very slow due to the warm temps and the winds. That's hunting, you can't control it.

(Closing the loop on my wounded buck last year)

Several people have asked me details on my mention of the buck I wounded last year. He was shot this year in the same general area by the neighboring landowner. So I'm sharing the details here since the Live hunt is slow..

This was the shot I took last year. I took a very hard quartering away shot which I have taken many times. Unfotunately, I pulled my shot a couple inches right resulting in a hip shot. We trailed the buck for hours and found little blood. Eventually we decided the deer was lost. I punched my tag and headed home.
A couple weeks ago I received a text from the caretaker of the property that borders Larry's Creek. He sent me this pic. It is the same buck I wounded last year! He had survived and was taken this year by the lucky bowhunter.
To our amazement, the buck was still carrying my arrow. There is no mistaking this, it is my Easton Axis Match Grade Arrow, with an Iron Will collar, and my Slick Trick Standard broadhead. I was very happy that my wounded buck not only survived, but was taken cleanly a year later! Cool story.
