Day 4

November 12th

Morning Hunt

Today I started at Larry's Creek. You may remember this was the stand that ended my hunt last year when I wounded and lost a buck. Interestingly, that deer was just killed on the neighbor's property and my arrow was still in him!!

Back to my morning hunt: I saw nothing until 10:00AM when a small buck came by. We had a rare Southeast wind this morning but we thought it would be OK. It was not. The buck hit my wind and became very nervous. He still came in but he was very nervous.

This was the first buck from this morning. He was nervous and winding me right here.

Thirty minutes later the eleven point seen on camera last night came in. We thought he "may" be a shooter but as he came in I decided not to shoot him. He looked like a three year old and I am looking for a mature deer. He hit my wind and nervously snuck out through the trees.

Another twenty minutes later the top buck in this area started heading in. He is a mainframe ten with long main beams, 15" G2s and 12" G3's and fantastic mass. I estimated him at 170". As he walked into the trees I drew my bow. Suddenly, his head snapped up and he ran away. I was so close to tagging a great Kansas buck. I called Kent and asked him to pick me up. No sense staying in a stand and educating all the deer.

He's had to see in this photo but that 170" buck walked in and then winded me seconds later.

I was so close! By the way, I really love that new Sitka pattern called 'Cover'

Afternoon Hunt

For the afternoon hunt I went back to Jarnagin's Draw. Wind really picked up throughout the day and by 1PM it was gusting to 35. It was also hot, so conditions sucked. I thought the ditch may get me out of the wind. The stand was flat, I saw one buck and two fawns.

This buck and two fawns were all that I saw from the Draw Blind
