Tuesday 12/29/98

After snowing for three days straight and about 36" on the ground it was time to start hunting again. The temperature had risen making the snow very wet and heavy. We drove down the road looking for a good track for Suzy and just taking it easy (Suzy has all season to get her cat so there was no rush) on the way down the road we had to navigate an avalanche which blocked the road.

It was a fun ride down the road, just like last year we spotted all sorts of critters like beaver, bald eagle and this herd of elk.

On the way down the road we passed the area where we had gutted my lion and Ron suddenly hit the breaks. There were fresh lion tracks leading up to it and then back again. It was a female by the stride and size of the tracks. The lion had apparently eaten some of my Tom's gut pile then buried the rest. You can see by the picture below where the cat scratched the snow over it.

Because we were unable to get off the trails on the snowmobiles because of heavy snow, we only spotted this one cat track today. We also spent the day skinning and tinkering with my cat. Here Ron discusses what to look for in a trophy cat.

We came back to a great dinner of elk Swedish meatballs then we skinned my lion. The hide was 8' 10" from nose to tail and the skull green scored at 14 8/16 which will easily make the P&Y minimum of 13 8/16 and will just make Boone & Crockett listings.
