LIVE DISCUSSION

Untitled Document

With four trophy muskox tagged by four happy bowhunters our attention now focused on caribou. There were big bull caribou in the muskox area but they were high up in the mountains. Frank suggested we go to an area that usually holds a lot of caribou and that meant a boat ride and a spike camp.

We packed up our gear and when the tide was right during the midday we left our cozy little Inuit cabin.

The ride took about an hour and as we got closer we could see a herd of caribou running the hills next to the fjord. This was a good sign.

Frank's rescue boat drafted too deep so we had to moor it in deeper water and transfer all our gear into Knud's boat. Another mile and we arrived at the campsite. It took us a while to drag all of our gear from the boats to the site and set up all the tents.

We had one big cooking tent and several sleeping tents. I couldn't get my stuff thrown into the tent fast enough because directly under our campsite was a clear water stream loaded with wild arctic char. I unpacked my fly-rod and hit the first big pool nearest to camp.

I tied on a black nosed dace and made an overhand cast into the back of the pool. Fish on. My very first cast in Greenland and I was fighting a char. The line snapped and I lost the fish. I tied on my other dace and on the 3rd cast was fighting another fish. This one I landed. It was an 18" char. On my fourth cast I landed a huge fish and that snapped my line. my 6x tippet was just too light for these voracious fighters. I cut the tippet off and snipped my leader back so I had a bit more line strength.

I caught five more fish before I landed an absolute giant char which snapped this heavier line. It was getting pretty dark so I packed it in. It was like I died and went to heaven. This was my first wild fishing stream since I took up fly fishing last year and I was hooked. My only concern was that fishing up here would wreck me for fishing back home. No trout streams back in the US compared with this char stream in the Greenland wilderness.

The boys and I stayed up for a while longer but we had a big day of reindeer hunting ahead of us and we all wanted to be well-rested. We didn't stay in our tents for long. Someone got up to take a leak and noticed that the northern lights were out.

I grabbed my camera and did my best to take a photo of them. Of course, the photos did them no justice, but I was able to catch some images before packing it in for good. I fell asleep listening to the babbling river flowing 100 yards below me.

Gear Used on this Bowhunt: Boots

While this hunt was not as demanding as a goat or sheep hunt, we put plenty of miles on our feet, especially during the caribou portion. These boots were brand new a week before this photo was taken but they performed flawlessly. Not a single blister, hot spot, or problem. At 8" tall and only 3.4 lbs per pair these boots were perfect for bowhunting. More Information Here
