After last night we were both fired up to get after more elk. The bulls were in here and that was fantastic given this in an OTC unit and public ground. The ticket was how far we were packed in as there wasn't a soul around our area.
We spent the entire day listening and glassing for elk. It was pretty slow till the evening.
Kent and I spent hours just listening and glassing. Moving slowly from one hill to the other. It was warm, yet breezy at the tops of the canyon and that made it a bit more difficult. Around 5PM, after spending the better part of 8 hours glassing our canyon, we decided to move East to another drainage.
It took us a while to get there and we crossed some beautiful lakes and meadows on the way. But eventually we made it to the top of the canyon rim which was a sheer drop for hundreds of feet. It was there we found several bulls.
We couldn't see them at first but they were down there, bugling in the trees. As soon as the sun went down the big boy walked out from the trees. It was probably close to an hour before dark, but we could see him plain as day. We cow called to see how fired up he was and there was no question after our first mew. He turned and bugled a growling scream right up the canyon wall to where we were standing in the trees. There was a very steep chute below us that Kent thought we could scurry down and kill the bull. I was less sure. We could only see the top half of the chute, the bottom half might be cliffs. So I wasn't on board with trying it. We opted to come right back here in the AM and call this bull in. I wish there was an easy way down here but neither of us had seen this canyon before and it was getting pretty late. So we left our screaming bull and his satellites and will hit it first thing tomorrow morning.
