Friday:

Steve and I decided to have some fun with our mornings' hunt for does and setup on the ground. We found a nice spot and settled in. We saw no does that morning but did glass a great big buck in the middle of a corn field - 500 yards away. He was with a doe.

We only hunted a couple hours and then Steve walked me around the property to show me some big rubs in the area. After that, we shot our bows and just relaxed. While Steve went back to his truck, he saw a monster 12 point cross the road. It was the deer he had been looking for all season! Though he never did get a crack at it, it was a relief knowing that the buck was still around.

For Friday evening, Steve and I hunted together on the ground. Ron had hunted this are in the morning and missed a doe. Nothing came in all afternoon and we left when the rains got heavy. Everyone else had the same idea and got out early.

We went and checked on the other guys but besides a small buck and some does, the morning was slow all around. It had become breezy with the approaching storm and the deer were not moving well.

All in all, the group had a great hunt. Bill (far left) passed on a nice buck and shot a doe. Steve Rupert (2nd from left) shot two does, Eric (3rd from left) shot a doe and Gary (far right) passed up a nice PY buck for something a little bigger. He also shot a doe. Ron (not pictured) missed a nice buck and a doe.

The trip is over - for this year. But I will be back in the future. I was very impressed with Steve's operation. This was a fair-chase hunt on prime hunting land for a fraction of the cost that you'd pay for other similar trophy deer hunts. His QDM program is working out well - as I can attest to. In all, I had two very nice bucks within range, and two that were out of range. In addition to about 100 does, I saw a dozen small bucks that will be shooters within the next year or so. The future looks bright!
