Day 2

Pat Lefemine

The way our hunt is structured I do not start my guided mulie hunt until the 5th day. So instead of sitting around camp, Frank lets us hunt unguided on prime areas of his property. This was just fine with me since I love to wander around the hills with my bow. Parker dropped me off at a place we hunted hard last year called McGill Pasture which is a mixture of rolling hills with broken timber - perfect for stalking mule deer.

At 8:00 AM I caught a glimpse of a really heavy mule deer buck bedded - and watching me. I continued on like I had not noticed the deer until I entered some pine trees, and immediatlely pulled up my binoculars. He was a good 4x4, light on tine length but good on mass. Next to him was a dinky 2x2. Unfortunately both bucks became uneasy when I disappeared from view. They jumped up and ran down the opposite side of the ridge.

I spent the rest of the day glassing the hillsides but did not find any more mulies. The weather had turned drastically cooler with high winds and rain - and the deer seemed to be hunkered down in the higher elevations. In all I spent a little over 9 hours in that area until Parker picked me up shortly before evening.

I hunted deer this morning in antelope creek. I saw one group with 4 mule deer buck and a couple of does; all were 2X2s of various sizes. A short time later I saw a group of 4 whitetail bucks with two does. One buck saw me and took off before I got a good look at him but I'm sure he was at least an eight point (eastern count). The other three couldn't figure out what scared the big buck so they just bedded down in the meadow. The biggest of the three that I got a good look at was a nice symmetrical eight point. I also saw two groups of 10 to 15 turkeys. Had a great day! Dale

The weather here has dropped sharply. But, the beauty of this ranch is its ability to provide hunters with opportunities regardless of temps.

After assisting with the recovery of Sam's buck, I was able to get to the Gas Chamber by 3:00 PM. Rain was falling and I wasn't certain I would see any speed goats before dark. Wrong! By 4:00 PM a group of 7 does were being lead to the water by a nice buck. The does drank, but Mr. Buck never presented the shot I was looking for.

Twenty minutes later a nice buck appeared with a single doe.

As they drank I sent a 500 gr arrow from my Morrison take-down just over his back at less than 13 yards. Bummer. I was sick and mad at myself for missing such an easy shot. The buck bolted to about 30 yards broadside. My second arrow caught him just behind the shoulder, passing completely through. The buck was down and dead in less than 75 yards. A super trophy. A super day.

Holly cow! You've got to hear about "My First Mulie". The morning started out cool and wet with light winds from the North. About 8:30 Leo (our guide for mule deer) spotted two bucks in a depression about a quarter mile away. Leo took me downwind and told me to get into some rocks for an ambush. He then circled the mulies and sure enough they both came through my draw at a trot. I spotted the lead deer and decided to take him (a nice 3X3 w/two brow tines). The shot was 25-27 yds and my lead proved to be a little short. I hit the buck mid-body but too far back, behind the liver and in front of the hind legs. Leo came up and we spotted where the deer headed. He was downhill about 400 yds. My deer laid down behind a sage bush and we watched him for the better part of an hour. We decided to stalk him and finish him off. About 90 yds away he stood up and began walking downhill toward a drainage. Leo called for Parker Moore to come down and help us keep track of the bucks movement. There was considerable blood and with Parker's help we found his next bed. He had tucked himself back in a crevasse along a steep wash. I approached from the top of the ridge but couldn't see him. Parker and Leo were guiding me toward the buck but I was now faced with a precarious descent down to the buck. I slid down the embankment and crept toward the hiding place. I came to the spot and saw one side of his rack around a rock. Coming to full draw I stepped around the rock for a shot but the buck bolted out of his hiding place and I missed. My mule deer was resourceful and tough but our persistence paid off in a short while as I was able to put him down in the slew just below the wash. Mulies are a tough breed and difficult to bowhunt, but the experience has made me more determined to continue pursuing this magnificent animal. What a great hunt! Two days of hunting and I was fortunate enough to get a Pronghorn and a Mule Deer Buck. Thanks again to Frank and Elaine Moore and all the folks at The Spearhead Ranch.

Another great day. Saw plenty of deer - some nice bucks - even a super eight pointer that I got within 90 yards of. I had three opportunities at three nice bucks one was a 3x3 the other two were four pointers. I had each deer broad side less than twenty yards. I missed all three shots. BUCK FEVER!!!!! I still have six days of hunting left and we'll just have to see what tomorrow brings. Hey dad having lots of fun. Thinking of you jen love ya. Todd Bosnick

No update, Steve hit the sack early. He spent a lot of time in the antelope blind despite less than ideal conditions. He had a few antelope come in including a nice buck but no shot opportunities.

Sorry I didn't write yesterday . I just fell asleep after dinner. The first day we saw 10 to 15 large bucks and were able to stalk on most of them. All unsuccessful. By the end of the day it felt like we hunted for three days. Awesome. Today we saw about the same amount of bucks. We took off after 4 nice bucks - unsuccessful. Saw a huge 8 point with a 4 point and (2) 3 points'. I took a shot at a nice 4 point at 50 yards and missed. This evening we put a stalk on a large group of mule deer . A 2x3 ran by at 25 yards. My shot severed the artery on his spine. A 60 yard 10 second kill. Hi Jan and Zach.
