This was a four day archery pronghorn hunt in far southwest Nebraska. The guide had multiple “hub” type blinds with comfortable chairs set up by cattle water tanks. I was taken to a blind three mornings and was in the blind well before sun up. I hunted different blinds each day. I stayed in the blind 14+ hours each day, leaving well after dark. In those three day sits, I saw exactly zero pronghorns. That’s why they call it hunting, but not even seeing an animal was extremely hard to accept. Apparently there had been some rains there in previous days so possibly the antelope were drinking elsewhere. But even if they were drinking elsewhere, I would expect to see some at a distance, I did not see a single pronghorn. On day three in the afternoon, my guide texted to see if I would be interested in a spot and stalk, if he spotted a stalkable pronghorn. I replied that I’m a 40 yard or less archery shooter and it’s very windy today, complicating a longer shot. But I told him if he spotted one that I might get within 40 yards, let me know. He apparently did not find such a stalking opportunity. After three days and 40+ hours of seeing no game animals, I decided not to waste my time on a fourth day sit. I’ve bowhunted 46 years and I believe this is the first time I’ve hunted that many hours without seeing a single animal.
