I hunted with WHO for mule deer and I got screwed. On the second day we spotted a nice non-typical that my guide wasn’t sure that I could shoot. He was hell bent on determining trophy quality solely by the animal’s posture. He took a picture and showed it to the other guides who confirmed that, yes, I could’ve shot that buck. We subsequently saw four more very, very nice bucks that I was more than willing to shoot, (160-175 class), but my guide said that they didn’t have the correct posture, so I couldn’t shoot them. . He took pictures of all of them, and he never got another second opinion. I ended up feeling compelled to shoot a 2.5 year old on the last day to make the success rate 100%. I then had to pay a $200 deposit to their taxidermist, (Trophy Taker, I believe), and I never heard another word from him. Maybe he should change his name to Money Taker. I discussed the hunting situation with the outfitter and he absolutely refused to offer any kind of retribution. I have a picture of one of the bucks that I wasn’t allowed to shoot. The guide has erased all of the pictures of the “shooter” bucks. On the fourth day I was strongly encouraged to shoot a big 3x3, (with the proper posture, lol, because the guide said that a 3x3 will never become a 4x4 and the outfitter wants them shot. I told him that I wasn’t there to shoot a cull buck. I payed over $8500 for that hunt as I was told that a160-170 4x4 is very doable. It wasn’t. For 2023 the ranch has a policy to NOT shoot anything over 180. So now hunters are limited to anything under 180, with the proper posture.
