Going elk hunting had always been my dream, so my wife was nice enough to send me out this past September for my 40th birthday present. Unfortunately, the best thing about the trip was the food. Every meal was great! As for the hunting aspect of the trip...I didn’t see a legal animal within 300 yards. Had a spike bull one evening at twenty yards for a split second. Heard some elk bugle but never got to see them. Saw a few cows with a bull several hundred yards out but by the time I got the binoculars up they had vanished into the aspen as quickly as they stepped out. No complaints with my guide, he was nice enough and seemed sincere about his clients being successful. My only complaint which may be partially my fault is that when I called Dan to ask what to expect on the hunt as far as animals go he told me that 6 out of 8 hunters got a shot ‘opportunity’ during this week the year before. I had assumed from a previous question about size of the bulls he had on the ranch where he told me 200-260 inch bulls were a good representation of what they had there that he meant 6 out of 8 hunters had shot opportunities at a 200-260 inch bull. The night before the hunt started we went through orientation and I quickly realized I was mistaken. Dan told everyone that if you have a opportunity at a legal animal(cow, calf, or bull with at least 4 points on a side) you better take it. If I would have known that, I would of went somewhere else. Once again, I may of misunderstood Dan on the phone initially on what to expect. This was my first outfitted hunt and it’ll probably be my last.
