There were 4 hunters in my party that booked a bear hunt/fishing combo package. Outfitter contacted me a week before the trip to inform me that he wouldn't be there. After arriving, We were informed that we would have to fish separately because they didn't have enough motorized boats. Then after asking a few more questions, we realized they didn't have any cameras set up at the bear sites so we asked to set up our own cameras. After doing that and asking some more questions, we realized that they only had a total of 12 bear sites ready and that they had been hunted by previous hunting parties. I've bear hunted in Canada several times with other outfitters and always had fresh exclusive bear sites to hunt. The guides worked hard and were friendly but one of them actually smoked in his truck while he was transporting you to the stand. That throws out the whole idea of minimizing your scent and using scent control products. Two of us did not see a bear all week. One hunter shot a smaller bear on Wednesday and the other hunter actually shot a nice 285 lb bear on Thursday. When the bear was taken to the walk in freezer on Thursday, they realized that the guide forgot to turn it on when he dropped off the smaller bear that was shot the previous day. So the first bear had sat in the cooler for a day without refrigeration. I wasn't aware of this until we were picking up the meat and skins and we were leaving at 4:00 AM. We iced the hide immediately hoping to salvage it since it was a younger hunter and his first bear. The hunter has tried to contact Rick Oliver (Outfitter) several times but he has not responded to texts or returned his phone calls.
Was the outfitter notified of problems? - NO
None to date. If you are the outfitter please email us.
Weather was a little cooler than my previous Canadian Spring Bear Hunts but I don't think it was a major factor in our lack of success.
