This was my second deer hunt with Ward's Outfitters. We were looking for either Coues or Mule Deer. The first few days we focused primarily on spot and stalk for Coues. Weather presented a challenge with hot temperatures and some severe thunderstorms. We saw some terrific Coues bucks but just couldn't close the deal.
My son shot a nice Muley on the second to last day. That evening Steven asked what I wanted to go after on my last day. Knowing we were going to have more storms in the mountains I said "Whatever you think will give us the best odds". Steven said lets get a Mule Deer!
We had several nice bucks glassed up first thing in the morning. After a quick hike we were in front of them and waiting. As the biggest buck came in he turned and headed directly to us. I muffed the shot! I was very upset with myself but Steven has a never give up attitude.
Back on the mountain my son had more bucks spotted. We got right back on them. We covered close to 5 miles trying to catch up to them. We finally did and I made a perfect 40 yard shot. Packing that deer out was the best feeling ever. Can't recommend Steven Ward and his crew enough!!
