Let me start by saying I am a newbie. My first hunt. I went to Brushy Hill Ranch with my 30 year old son, who has bow hunted twice elsewhere without success, and had an amazing time. We hunted on an 1,800 acre parcel of the ranch all to ourselves over four days. My son shot a good sized boar the second day, tracked the blood trail for two days and came up empty handed. On the fourth day I was able to kill a medium sized hog.
The trip was one of the best my son and I have been on and we have been on some amazing trips. The owners, Pete and Ava, are the models of old-time Texas Hospitality.
The only time I have seen more animals on one property in my life is at the zoo. We saw 8 hogs, 2 axis deer, 4 white tail, coyotes, raccoons, armadillos, and a lot more. (Keep in mind, this is during the heavy rains of June 2015 where everything is green and lush and there’s tons of food for every critter.)
There is a huge variety of terrain: from thick mesquite and brush to muddy creek bottoms to open grass and dirt with small trees for good cover and stalking. We covered most of the 1,800 acre section of the ranch we were on and had it all to ourselves. We felt like we experienced a real hunt: we had to scout and track and stalk for days. In the process we got to know the 3 square mile area, understand it, and be successful. We didn’t want a high-fence, caged-in, canned experience, like fishing in someone’s overstocked small pond. We had to work for it, and that made it real and thoroughly satisfying. That may not be what every one wants but that is exactly what we wanted and got. Completely satisfied.
If you are looking for 400 count cotton sheets on your bed, go somewhere else, but if you want a rustic, no frills hunting cabin with cold ac, a fridge, hot showers, the most reasonable rates around, and tons of variety, this is the place. Brushy Hill was better than we imagined and we highly recommend it. We are going to make it a yearly trip.
None to date. If you are the outfitter please email us.
Heavy to light rains on and off. Though muddy at times, when the rains came they cooled us down and better yet, brought the hogs out to feed in the day time.
