Our first "mancation" of many to come the four of us arrived on a hot June weekend eager to hunt wild hog for our very first time. We chose Shiloh Ranch based on the NUMEROUS excellent reviews and recommendations. We were greeted as if we were old friends by Matt and Cheryl who, despite having hosting countless hunters over the years, made us feel as if we were their very first guests. We couldn't have hoped for better hosts. We stayed at the Guest House and it was comfortable, clean, well equipped, and most importantly had central A/C to cool us off after the hunt. The campsite on the ranch is amazing and next time we will book during a cooler part of the year so we can stay in the cabins and sit by a campfire (they do have window A/C units but when it's 90+ out the guest house is recommended). The ambiance of the cabins and the campsite is amazing and really sets the tone for a great hunting experience.
All four of us were successful in harvesting a hog on the first night (90 lbs, 110 lbs, 150 lbs, and 200 lbs...approximations). The quality and numbers of wild hog on the ranch almost guarantee an opportunity. They are wild though so don't think they will just come in, sit still, and give you a shot. Like any hunt you will have to play the wind, be patient, and be true with your shot (I got lucky with mine as it was a poor shot and was only able to bring home the "bacon" due to a spine shot).
We will absolutely be back. As I always do, I had just as much fun watching the other wildlife as I did the actual hunting. Deer came in and milled around my stand for about an hour and squirrels are always amusing. Most importantly, spending time with your friends on a hunt is always a treasured memory and this one will rank up there with the best.
