Hunter Comments

On day one of this three day hunt we had plenty of action including: gobbling from the roost, a jake came in and socialized with the decoys and several sightings of distant birds. Guide Mike Connett was no early quitter and we located a gobbling tom around 11:15. By 11:30 I had filled tag one with a 4.5 year old 23 pounder sporting a 10 inch paintbrush and incredible spurs of 1.5 inches...a world class bird in anybody's book. This bird came in on rope to the guide's calling and I made an easy 25 yard shot with the Remington 870. In an effort to top this experience day two included a transition to the compound bow. Having never harvested a bird with the bow I was looking forward to this experience and after day one it was clearly a mission we could accomplish. An afternoon trip to the back yard archery range at the brand spanking new main camp proved to set the tone for a confident bow hunter heading back to the turkey woods for morning number two. After seeing a few birds but not being able to entice any within range of the blind and decoy set up,I made the suggestion that I felt confident in being able to draw on a bird without the blind if we were able to get one located in the hardwoods. Not hesitating the guide changed location quickly and effeciently locating a gobbling tom again around 1115. The set up could not have been more perfect allowing for me to come to full draw and fill my second tag with a perfectly placed 20 yard shot on another mature tom. The guide was able to locate the blood trail and we were able to recover my first bow harvested turkey. Owner and outfitter Mike Connett has all the ingredients for an awesome Spring Turkey hung. The main camp lodge is brand new and very comfortable, the properties are loaded with birds, and Mike is very knowlegeable about turkey hunting strategy. We had a memorable hunt and I'm looking forward to returning to Widerack Outfitters.
