Jake's Difficulty Rating

Woodland Caribou 0

Jake rated each animal based on three criteria:

1.) degree of training probably required:
2.) element of danger...(either from the expected weather, terrain, or animal)
3.) the cost.

Zero would be the lowest, and three would the highest.

He did not take into account the difficulty involved in taking a P&Y caliber animal (i.e. mule deer, etc).

Jake's Woodland Caribou Summary

What a cool animal to bowhunt! I hunted in Newfoundland for my Woodland Caribou. On the very first day, I stalked to within 10 yards of two completely separate stags. I passed on both, because I had already seen the stag that I wanted to take. He had virtually NO tops to speak of, but his shovel and bez points were so well developed, that I wanted to hunt specifically for him. When I finally got a shot opportunity, I was a little winded, and I believe that I rushed my shot, The arrow hit him either high in the liver or the kidney. He ran with his does to about 80 yards, and my guide started to beat a tree with a branch. He stopped to turn around and check us out again. I practice shooting out to 100 yards for this reason. While I will not attempt a first shot at this distance, I would not hesitate to take an 80 yard shot if I have already hit an animal. The second arrow double lunged him and he went down within 10 yards. My guide took up archery that day......
