Jake's Difficulty Rating

Sitka Blacktail Deer 0.5

Jake rated each animal based on three criteria:

1.) degree of training probably required:
2.) element of danger...(either from the expected weather, terrain, or animal)
3.) the cost.

Zero would be the lowest, and three would the highest.

He did not take into account the difficulty involved in taking a P&Y caliber animal (i.e. mule deer, etc).

Jake's Sitka Blacktail Deer Summary

I bowhunted on Prince of Wales Island in November of 2008. For those people that have been lucky enough to hunt in that area, I am sure that they will agree that it is an wonderful place to hunt. The cedar trees are absolutely huge, and the mossy setting in the tall forest makes it quite easy to move with no sound. You keep waiting to see an elf behind every tree! We actually used a fawn bleat predator call and it worked extremely well. Since we are hunting during the rut, the fawn distress call brings in the protective does, and the bucks aren't usually far behind. I took a nice 8 point (eastern count) or a 3X3 with eye guards (western count). The Sitka alders that the bucks rub on give the antlers a really pretty orangish color. I brought back quite a bit of the meat and Nancy and I marinated it for a couple wild game 'feasts'.
