my morning location
AM Hunt - I headed back to the same stand as last night.
A slight rain started to fall at 6:00 AM and by 7:30 it was raining steadily.
At 8:00 I saw one deer out in the middle of the field which ran into the woods
but that was it until 9:00. A doe and two fawns fed around my stand at 60
yards. I took out my camera and snapped a couple photos.
It looked as if the deer were going to skirt around me but they
changed their minds and came right in. I decided that if I got a good shot
at the doe, I would shoot her. She trotted in and I gently traded the camera
for my Morrison Longbow. I thought the doe spotted me pull an arrow out, but
I was wrong. She walked back to 20 yards. I drew and waited for a good angle.
One of her fawns watched me draw my bow. I shot, and the arrow sailed clear
through her.
PM Hunt - I went back to the same farm for the evening
but hunted a different area. The rain had stopped, the sun was out, and it
just felt like a good deer afternoon. One half hour after getting situated
a doe ran by my stand. A few moments later several deer came in including
a small buck who was chasing whichever doe was closest.
This went on for several minutes until another, bigger, buck
showed up and ran off the smaller one. Neither buck was a shooter but it was
fun to watch. Eventually they left and another herd came in. I had nonstop
deer until dark including this little buck which fed under my stand. No big
bucks yet. The rut is really getting hot - it should be any day now.
