CT CONFERENCE HUNT TO FEED CT 3D SHOOTS BANQUET

UBC President's Message

Greetings to our U.B.C. Members-

I hope this letter finds all members enjoying spring and if you turkey hunt, I hope you are having a great season. I am fortunate to have been asked by Scent-Lok to represent them as the pro-staff advisor at the new Cabela’s store in Scarborough, Maine. So here I am, sitting in a Holiday Inn missing the first 3 days of spring turkey season – but having a great time meeting hundreds of sportsmen and women and pros in the industry.

At this time I would again thank Kent Goodridge for a job well done with the annual U.B.C. banquet, as well as thanking everyone who supported us by attending, the outfitters, and personal members who donated their time and items for the raffles. This dedication has made the banquet successful through the years.

I also want to share Kent’s suggestion that he be allowed to lead the U.B.C. in another direction with a summer outside picnic event for members, their family and guests. We will continue to discuss this at meetings and will keep you informed as to its progress.

As Kent’s time and energy is dedicated to this new venture we will be welcoming a Banquet Chairman, someone we all know, Ray Hanley from Southbury. Ray is well known for his many accomplishments within the sportsmen and Boy Scout communities as well as the N.R.A. Ray has been gracious enough to come forward, and with a committee has offered to lead the 2009 Banquet. We have already changed the location to the Aqua Turf in Plainville and it will be on a Sunday afternoon. We are hoping this will accommodate more people. Also, we will be offering a children’s meal portion and items for a children’s raffle. We hope we can rely on your continued support.

The shows in Hartford as well as Springfield were slow this year due to the weather as well as the economy, but still picked up new members and did renewals as always. The folks we spoke with at the shows were fine with the new computer generated newsletter. The change was due to ongoing problems with magazine companies. I will try and have future newsletters posted through the year.

This year our Sunday Hunting Bill was not raised due to a short session and budget items. We thought we might have a chance with a bill on lyme disease and to combat its effects. This bill would have been a Sunday Hunting Bill. Trying to cut down the rising numbers of whitetail deer subsequently cutting the number of deer carrying lyme disease ticks – however, session ended last week – now it may come back at a special session but we are not positive at this point.

I personally think we are lucky this year to be recognized and link up with two major groups in Connecticut – these two groups show support as well as attend our monthly meetings – they are WhiteTail Solutions and the QDMA (Quality Deer Management Association) . I believe these two organizations can only benefit us – with all hunting related issues.

The U.B.C. has also become a proud sponsor of the Hunt To Feed program, which allows any state hunter an avenue to donate their venison “free” of charge to have it processed and delivered to the CT Food Bank and various other non-profit organizations. Visit www.hunttofeed.com for all of the details and learn how you can participate in this program.

Although our Sunday hunting bill was not addressed, we did not totally lose as sportsmen. The U.B.C. would like to thank Representative Craig Miner for initializing the moose and bear season – this bill did pass – leaving it up to the Governor to sign, which would then direct D.E.P. to allow hunting as they see fit. This is a great ruling in the sportsmen’s favor. I have also been made aware of a regulation change that may happen for bowhunters, but I have to wait until it happens to disclose it in detail. Sorry to make this a mystery but I promised I would not reveal this change just in case it does not happen. It should make some bowhunters very happy – enough said.

I again would like to make mention of the monthly meetings. They are the third Wednesday of each month, 7-9PM at Cabela’s in East Hartford in their conference room. I would like to thank Cabela’s for allowing us to have our meetings there. We have noticed a major improvement in the attendance at our meetings and invite any member to attend.
