I'm a new hunter. I have seen this guy on my cam several times. This is a solid buck, correct?

By: BigOk
Date:04-Aug-17

Without a doubt.

Date:04-Aug-17

CHOOT 'EM! CHOOT 'EM!!

Date:04-Aug-17

There are many bowhunters who go through their entire bowhunting career and NEVER put their tag on a buck like that. Without question, that is a solid buck!

Date:04-Aug-17

might go150

Date:05-Aug-17

Like Woods Walker said..............Choot!!! Choot!!!!!

Date:05-Aug-17

Solid buck but do not wait for him!! Shoot the first buck that makes ya happy, nothing like shooting deer any deer when you are new bow hunter. Shawn

Date:05-Aug-17

Yeah, he's big enough for me!

Date:05-Aug-17

Gotta love those big 8's

Date:05-Aug-17

Too small for Kentucky. Give it a pass this year and send us the exact location so we can watch it for you.

Date:05-Aug-17

Double post.

Date:05-Aug-17

He's very nice but an 8 point has to be a lot bigger than that to make 150".

Date:06-Aug-17

I have a very simple system of scoring to determine if a deer I see hunting is a "shooter". The beauty of it is there's no math whatsoever involved in it. It consists of 3 steps......

1. The minimum range must be as close to 100 yards as possible. More is better.

2. The VERY first thing that I'm aware when I first see it is...."It's a BUCK!" (And this is WITHOUT the aid of optics).

3. The second thing....and it happens SO close in time to the first thing that it may as well be included....is that it's a BIG buck. This step may or may not include me wetting my pants.

After that it's simply a matter of if it will come in range and present a decent shot. It's simple, effective and has never let me down!

Date:06-Aug-17

If your a new hunter then shoot your does as well that's your experience your passing up. Bucks generally come with time but one like this could be beginners luck of being in right place at right time. You might learn whats seen on camera is not a given. It all takes being in right place at right time. A lot of times cameras show is when they came by and you can easily mess up an animal the first time you get near him there are many variables.

Date:06-Aug-17

Why do you have to ask others whether its good enough for you???

Date:06-Aug-17

Very nice deer!

Date:06-Aug-17

Your kidding right? This is the problem with hunting or should I say horn hunting in today's world. Someone who claims to be new at hunting who I'm sure has watched numerous shows and read plenty of magazines is asking if this Buck is a shooter, very sad. If this doesn't prove that the horn porn game shows/ hunting industry running out there are teaching the wrong attitude for new hunters I dont know what is. No wonder the numbers for new hunters is dropping and we are all going to suffer from this. I wonder how many new hunters go out and in their first year, don't see a or let alone shoot a buck that's in their mind a shooter and give up. Let's face it, as experienced hunters know, not seeing game or killing a deer regardless or horns can get very discouraging towards late seasons. To answer the OP question, yes young man that deer is a shooter and most hunters will never shoot a buck that big. Don't get hung up with the size of antlers, shoot for the meat and the horns will follow and If you never shoot a 150 plus deer you'll never regret it, because you will be filled with great stories and memories of taking a big game animal that taste great.

Right on LB. Reminds me of a neighbor several years back that practiced hard all summer, had two bucks patterned very well also. Every time he saw them, the larger buck was in the lead and passed his stand at almost exactly the same time daily.

First weekend he could hunt, on stand about an hour before the bucks should come by. Right on schedule, the first buck walked past, he shot it and it turned out to be the smaller buck. 100"? Bigger one was slightly bigger 110" maybe

Anyhow two days later he came by, took my dirt cheap offer and sold all his equipment and far as I know hasn't bowhunted since.

Date:06-Aug-17

If he gets you excited, shoot!

Date:06-Aug-17

ANYONE who'd pass that deer up, especially with a bow, is one (or more), of these things.......

1. Not a hunter.

2. Has been watching WAAAAY too much horn porn.

3. Is hunting a fenced enclosure where he's ordered deer of a certain size to be stocked for him (see #1 above....)

By: hobbes
Date:06-Aug-17

I tried to post 137 as gross score, but appears not to have worked. Says "not in acceptable range". Maybe a typo or something to do with my phone

Anyway......thats a solid buck that I wouldn't pass especially as a new bowhunter.

Date:06-Aug-17

My first deer was a button buck and I could not be happier.

Date:06-Aug-17

Best of luck with your new hobby. I think guys may misunderstand you are just very proud of your trail camera picture and excited about getting out to hunt soon. Me too!! Good luck! C

Date:06-Aug-17

No jealousy Charlie, read the OP post, he's asking if it's good enough to shoot.

By: Bake
Date:06-Aug-17

LB. . . You read it again. He just asks if he's a solid buck. He does NOT ask if he's a shooter.

Lots of conclusions drawn from only one sentence.

And woods walker, I would pass that deer this year, yet I meet none of your three conclusions.

Date:06-Aug-17

Anyone else notice the other buck in that pic?

By: BigOk
Date:06-Aug-17

Yes, can see 2 nd buck but can be sure of antler size.

By: Bake
Date:06-Aug-17

And yes, he's a very solid buck.

Date:06-Aug-17

I'm a new hunter. I have seen this guy on my cam several times. This is a solid buck, correct? Bake, you left out the correct? He is asking if it is a solid buck to shoot.

By: t-roy
Date:06-Aug-17

That's a very nice buck, Pearljam, and welcome to the hunting community!

Why is it that if a guy holds out and passes on a nice buck, he's guilty of watching too much "horn porn" or only a horn hunter? I didn't read Pearljam's question as whether this buck was a shooter, only, as Bake and Charlie pointed out, whether he was a nice deer or not.

Pearljam states that he is a new hunter. Having hunted whitetails for quite a few years, I know what a big whitetail looks like, but if I went Coues deer, Sitka blacktail, mountain goat, sheep, etc., I would have to rely on others imput as to what constituted a "solid" animal. When I went to Africa, I relied on my PH on what was a trophy vs just an average animal. (I was after "trophies" btw)

Date:06-Aug-17

Looks like he is a 130" 3.5 year old. Good luck to you this fall! Hunt smart and you could have a chance with him.

Date:06-Aug-17

Looks like a good buck. In PA I'd be at full draw.

If he gets your heart pumping than you already know what to do!

Good luck this fall.

Date:06-Aug-17

If you're a new hunter the last thing you want to do is "hold out" if you really want to learn how to hunt deer. There's only one way to become a deer hunter...get out in the woods and kill deer. Period.

Yes, videos, books, cameras, the internet can be a great source of learning aids, but the only true way to do it is hands on, literally. The more deer you kill the more you learn about deer. How they react, move, and when you inevitably have to trail a marginally hit one you will learn more about trailing a deer and where and how they move on your ground than all the books and internet advice in the world. And then there's anatomy. The ONLY way to learn that and where and why you place an arrow and how the animal actually functions is to get your hands bloody.....a lot. Let them teach YOU. Forget for the time being any mathematical scores and whether a deer that YOU are hunting meets someone else's standards. They don't matter, not at all. It's simply you and the deer. You have plenty of time for the horn porn and mathematical ego chest thumping. For now just hunt and kill whatever deer gives you a high percentage shot.

Date:07-Aug-17

Anyone else not able to see the picture on their computer?

I see all the comments, but am not able to see any picture.

Date:07-Aug-17

I submitted a guess of 132 ...got an error message. Anyway nice buck

Date:07-Aug-17

I don't get all the controversy. He's new to the game. He wants to know if this is a solid buck.

Yes it is, hope you kill him. Welcome to the forum where sometimes you get a good answer and sometimes you get a rant. Damn !

Date:07-Aug-17

Some of you CLEARLY forgot what it's like to be a new hunter.

As a new hunter you have NO idea what's small, average or big. I remember the first antelope I shot it scored 74". My buddy and I had never shot an antelope before. We thought it was maybe 62". It's still one of the biggest I have ever shot.

Until you have put your hands on a few racks you have no experience of size. That goes for a lot of things.

Date:07-Aug-17

I sure hope he continues to post but it wouldn't surprise me if he goes dormant. Such a shame!

By: PECO
Date:07-Aug-17

He is a nice, solid buck. That being said, do not hold out for him. Shoot the first legal deer that presents a good shot within your comfort range.

Date:07-Aug-17

Maybe times have changed, but when I was a new hunter size meant nothing. All that mattered was, "IT'S A DEER"! You must learn the alphabet before you can write a book. Making kills is like learning your ABC's. When I started killing deer I'd spend a lot of time after they were on the ground just studying them. The guts, the feet, the eyes, teeth, the odor, legs, everything. It's like having an open textbook laying there. In fact I STILL do a lot of that even now. The people that started me hunting also did all their own butchering. That in and of itself is a great educational experience. If you have a firm foundation of these basics then the rest will follow.

Date:07-Aug-17

Off topic, but like Sage, the first antelope I killed measured 78 2/8". I had no idea I would never kill another that size !

Date:08-Aug-17

If solid means shooter, then yes

Date:08-Aug-17

IMO that's a 20" spread with good mass and length.

I'd shoot him in a second and so would everyone else here.

Date:08-Aug-17

Solid as solid can be

Welcome to our wonderful world of Bow Hunting

By: XMan
Date:08-Aug-17

Pearljam, that's a stud right there and if I were you, I would be thrilled to get him this season. Any deer that makes you shake in the knees when they come in is a good one :)

By: LINK
Date:08-Aug-17

140ish. He could be 3.5 but most like is 4.5 or older. He's a definite shooter for someone that has to ask if he is. Absolutely no chance he makes 150, let the air out of him and put a tape on him for us.

Date:08-Aug-17

135

Date:08-Aug-17

That is a good buck. I'd be thrilled to get a couple glimpses of him during season and it would be huge to get a shot at him. But there is some good advice on here. If you haven't shot many deer, shoot at the first legal deer that comes by. If you have the luxury of having a lot of opportunities to shoot antlerless deer, do it and save your buck tag in case he comes by. But getting some kills under your belt is huge, the experience of shooting during the adrenalin rush is important to learn. Hunt smart. Don't cheat the wind.

Date:08-Aug-17

Solid 132" - 136" buck good in any state but obviously more impressive in some states over others. .. I am shooting that buck in NJ - or Ohio. Wow- what's happened to this site? The responses to a fellow hunter posting a nice buck are quite astounding to say the least....

By: Bowman
Date:11-Aug-17

I do not see a picture either.

Date:11-Aug-17

For those who cannot see the deer turn your phone sideways

Date:11-Aug-17

Sideways??? What will that do? It'll be even harder to see because the phone's only 1/4" thick or so when you turn it sideways. ;-)

No seriously, what would tipping it sideways do?

Date:11-Aug-17

Woods, get with the program dude ! This is the.....wait.....what century is this ?

Date:11-Aug-17

The pics on my phone are the same if I'm standing up, laying down or standing on my head. So what does sideways have to do with it? Is that another app you have to buy? And what the heck for?

Date:15-Aug-17

Lol, but for an answer. A solid buck is whatever your gut says is a solid buck. If you think a four pointer looks solid at a moment, then its a solid buck. But hey, if you want to be a trophy manager and let the deer grow for a year, It may pan out with a 150 inc, or it may get shot and/or never come back. Its all up to you.

By: Fuzzy
Date:15-Aug-17

150 gross, low 140's net, very nice!
