136 gross.... Has good mass, but unfortunately P&Y won't give that buck any extra credit for "character" and the palmation will only count as one of those being an abnormal point and a deduction. Congrats - very nice buck and who cares what it scores!

It's my buddies deer, he said he scored it at 169" gross and I thought that was a little bit high! As soon as he gets it back from the taxidermist I'll put tape to antlers!

Great and very cool buck, but tapes no where near 160. Should gross low 140's. Congrats.

Miller's got nothing on the upside down tractor pic.
That buck's gross is hard to guess. I think he'll make 125 net (that point on the left will get deducted), but guessing those mass measurements is tough.
My first gut said 140 gross.

He must be using that kansas tape, they like to measure inside spread, outside spread and a tip to tip measurement. I have seen it a lot, they make a 115 into a 150.

yeah, thats a hard one to guestimate on, I would guess 142 gross. There is no way that deer is 160's, someone had to be drinking a fewcelebratory brews prior to putting tape on it :)

Wouldnt surprise me if that deer has 150 total inches of antler. That includes the 9th non-typical point. I'm looking across the room at my 150" 8pt and can see it easy. Now almost 170? i'm obviously missing something if thats the case...

I would guess
That I'd go online to P&Y or B&C and print off a score sheet. Then take a thin tape measure or string and tape and follow the simple steps. That will get you a WAY closer answer than showing a pic on the web for guesses.
Rough scoring is really quite easy
Very nice buck all the same. Falls into the " way better buck than the numbers say" category.

This buck grosses 160 and change with 7.5" bases and over 40"s in mass measurements. The more I look, very short main beams, some mass but not great. Maybe gross 120"s

Tough to score anything from a picture but main beams are short, spread is narrow, tine length are short to med and it has lots of deductions so will probably net around 110 or 115

deerman406

So, do did we ever tape the rack?? Main beam 32"s brow tines 7"s than G-2's 16"s inside spread 12"s G-3's 12"s and than the odd point 5"s. These are all based on adding side to side measurements together. Than add up all the circumferences, maybe 30"s. I think these measurements are more than generous. Than add them up. It comes to 113"s gross. Tell me where you come up with much more than that. Shawn

I think this buck would have too many deductions to score as a typical. That said, I really doubt he would make pope and young minimums. So, if I had shot this buck I would put him on my wall and never score him. Why let someone else tell you how good a buck you got. I have been fooled before though....

Are you kidding on the 140" comment? Look at the buck I posted above. He grosses 167" and he has mass measurements just over 40"s. He has brow tines that are over 8"s. After deductions and scored as a typical he is only 133"s. Sorry that buck will have trouble grossing 120"s, let alone net. Shawn

As I said the one I posted above goes 122" the one in question has a lot more mass, and a little more time length, I can see him squeaking out 15" more putting it close to mid 130's. This buck went 131"

I think some may be underestimating the frame size and mass on the OP's buck. Easy to do though, when all you have is a pic and unable to put your hands on the rack. Even with large circs, it's tough for an 8-point frame to hit 140's, without having unusually long brow tines and/or long g3's. I'd guess this one to be in the mid-to-upper 130's.
By:
deerman406
Date:03-Dec-15

Stick do you think it has more than 30"s of mass measurements. As I said the buck I posted has 40"s of mass and it has 7.75" base on one side and 6.75"s on the other. I am dying to see if anyone measured this buck. Beams 16"X 2 is 32"s and a spread of 14"s is only 46"s 30"s in mass is 76"s. add all the tines and if they equal 40"s that would be generous, that is 116"s. Just saying. Siverado, I can see it in the deer you posted but not in the original post. Sorry maybe I am nuts! Shawn

Ok , this is driving me nuts. For the guys who say 130"s. Tell me how you arrive at that please. Give me some measurements that justify that. As I have done in my post above. Sorry no one can convince this buck is 130"s even gross. Shawn

I would think he grosses within a few inches of 130" deerman - you're short on mass and short on mainbeams. Actually get a pencil out and start adding him up instead of comparing him to your deer and making assumptions that nobody knows how to score a deer.
By:
deerman406
Date:04-Dec-15
|
I did take out a pencil. How can his mass be over 30"s? He would need at least 2 measurements over 5"s on each side to get close. Ok, but those main beams are no way over 20"s and I said more like 16"s or so. MDcrazyman has it right. Look at his post. I understand it is very hard to judge deer on the internet but I myself am having a very hard time of seeing 130"s. I also just used my buck as an example. I have a ton of other examples on my walls and a lot have been officially scored and I have several that go right into that range of 115-120"s and that is what this buck look like to me. Shawn

Yup, I am done arguing my points. I won't post again as I am even beginning to annoy myself! Sorry guys it just kills me no one has posted a score. I mean just take a pencil, measuring tape, a boot lace and just do it. It will get you darn close. I will even send you my kit and instructions and you can do it. I went online and downloaded a virtual ruler. I could not do circumference with it but everything else the best I could and giving this deer 34"s in circumference measurements(which I believe is a lot) I came up with 121"s. I do not know how accurate the program is but I tried it on a few of my deer I downloaded pictures of and it was within a few inches. Try one yourself. I used MB rulers, but there are a bunch that are free. Shawn

His main beams are bigger than 16 inches. Look at the OP and you'll see a different angle.
The caped and downward facing pictures thereafter make him look smaller than he is if you compare to the OP. If you take a picture from above, it makes it look smaller. If you take a picture of a rack without an animal attached, it can make it look smaller.
Also, where will the the left H3 and H4 measurments be taken? If even one of them are taken around that palmation, that could add several inches to the gross score. Edit: If I understand it right, the palmation won't get measured though.
deerman, comparing your buck to this buck is kinda pointless because they're not shaped anything alike and have completely different tine lengths. Comparing a wildly atypical rack like yours to one that's almost typical is apples and oranges.
That said, I still think the OP's buck will net 120s, but if he grossed or netted in the 130s, I wouldn't be surprised.

I just put pin to paper on this one. I come up with 134 gross. Obviously hard to be exact without having the antlers in front of you(still puts it a long way from the 169). MB I am from Kansas so I guess I better add in about 50 more inches per your comment! So after the recalculation that is a 184 inch deer in Kansas :) Haha

deerman, not sure why you are struggling on this buck....16" main beams? Seriously?
30" of mass??? If your buck has 40" of mass that buck has 36"
the tines slant in so they are longer......they possess some mass in the tines so they will measure a little longer still.....
I can see that buck 132 easily and wouldn't be surprised him 135+

OK, said I was not gonna post but as I said I used an on-line ruler and yes the beams are over 16"s but only 19"s. Idly please post what you get for measurments. The one major disagreement is circumferences. As I said the buck I posted starts with bases over 7.5"s and this buck gets one less circumference measurement as an 8pt. Also how long do you think the main beams are on the buck I posted. I also agree with who ever stated that Euro buck being 122"s. I find that hard to believe also. Grosses in the 120's yes, nets over that, no. I shot a buck this year that grosses 131 and nets 128 and I am sorry he is without a doubt scores better than this buck. I am done, sorry I posted again. Shawn

8 pts get 4 circumference measurements. Not sure why everyone thinks otherwise? The 4th measurement is taken halfway between the G3 and the end of the main beam. Maybe thats why so many people seem to guess so low on some of these deer.

Correct, as a Measurer for P&Y and B&C antlered species including a spike buck gets 4 mass measurements on each side. Yes sir a spike buck and a 12 point each get four mass measurements on each side. Never more and never less!

Lol you guys are killing me. Some people don't realize that deer come in all sizes. A 300 pound deer with a 28" neck will make a 160" rack look tiny compared to the same rack on a deer half the size with an 18" neck. This deer has so much mass its not funny. The diameter of a normal eye is 4". Now compare that to the bases on this deer..... no one has questioned whether "Don" 's buck (the 1st deer pic posted other than Carbonfiber1) is roughly 130". Now look at his eye vs his mass. That buck pry has right at 4" mass. Now look at CarbonFiber1's buck. There is at least 1 more inch at every point. Now throw in an extra tine. Also take 2 secs to realize that the base of G2 tines on carbonfiber1's buck have more mass than the actual H1 measurements "don" 's buck.
