Went out the evening before the started saw several elk. Heard lots of bugle.
Prior to my getting there Steven had all ready spotted several bulls that I would be interested in.
First morning we were in the area where he had spotted a bull with a split 4th on one side and a split 5th on the other. He spotted the bull from our vantage point and had me set up for the shot. The bull ran across the opening so there was no shot. The bull was bugling so we chased the bugles. After about a half hour of walking the bull stopped walking and bedded down.
Steven soon spotted him right next to powerline right of way laying down and sheltered by brush.
We watched the bull for the next two hours hoping he would stand and offer a clean shot. No such luck, but with the sun rising higher in the sky I could see a hole through the brush where I could see his front shoulder. After consulting with Steven I went ahead and took the shot. The rest is anticlimactic as the bull leaped to his feet with one disabled front quarter. He only went 30 yards.
