Question Dear Dr.Samuel, My name is John. I'm a sporstman from NJ. May I ask if you ever had the chance to meet H.R. - John M. Rudy 10/29/2003, ID=2244
Answer
Dear John, No, I've never met Dutch Wambold, but sure know his name from way back. And I have not met Gene Hill, but another excellent writer. Relative to the 60's.........they were great, but when it comes to bowhunting deer, for me, now is the time. And as I write this, the bucks are starting to chase, even though it is hot. Time to get out there. Glad you like my website, www.knowhunting.com. As soon as the rut is over I've got to update it.

Best regards, Dr. Dave

Question HERE IN INDIANA DURING SHOTGUN SEASON YOU CAN HARVEST A DOE. IT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR AT LEAST 5 YEARS. MY QUESTION IS: HOW CAN WE GET THIS STOPPED? IT'S RUINING THE HUNTING FOR EVERYONE, ALL THE STATE WANTS IS THE EXTRA MONEY PLEASE HELP.

- damon duffy 10/22/2003, ID=2240

Answer
Dear Damon, I guess I don't understand what is happening in Indiana. In most states in the mid-west, and northeast, there are way too many does, and we need to harvest more. EVery doe takes the food a buck could eat, if the sex ratio was closer to 1 to 1. My information tells me that this same situation is taking place in parts of Indiana. How many adult does do you see for every adult buck? If it is mroe than 2 or 3 to 1, then you probably need to harvest more does. If you see more bucks than does, then you may need to reduce your doe harvest, and the best way to do that is work through your hunting clubs at the state level to interact with your game department and politicians. Question I want to know if it is mandatory to have bowhunter education in order to get your bow license - if you took hunter safety?

- charlie 09/16/2003, ID=2234

Answer
Dear CHarlie, Bowhunter education is mandatory in a number of states, even if you have taken the regular hunter safety course. Not all states, but quite a few. So, you need to check with your state game agency and they can tell you. A faster way would be to ask at your local archery shot......they should know.

Best regards, Dr. Dave

Question Dave, my name is James Davis and I plan to purchase around 30-50 acres of land next year in central Tennessee upon which I plan to build a house later on. My question is this: Is 30 acres a large enough tract of land in which I could plant an effective food plot that will produce quality deer over time? I do not hunt over food plots as I sort of see it as - James Davis 05/21/2003, ID=2136
Answer
Dear Jim,

I'm afraid relative to quality deer management, you cannot do much with 30 acres. You can create some plantings of course, but holding animals on the area, even if good habitat, will be tough to do on 30 acres. Now, if you are surrounded by good deer habitat that isn't hunted much, then you might be able to benefit by improving your 30 acres, but otherwise, it just isn't enough land. So, the next best thing might be to build a coalition with surrounding land owners and start a collective QDM program. In effect, that's how QDM got started in South Carolina. One land owner had success, and adjacent land owners then started QDM, and after a time the whole county was doing it. Good luck and enjoy your new property. Dr. Dave
