Dave and I headed back to the South Ridge at dawn. We saw a lot of does but only two decent bucks. We watched them move into a draw and down to the trees. We discussed stalking them but agreed that once they were out of sight, it would be nearly impossible to find them again. We used the rest of the morning checking other areas and saw more does but the bucks were eluding us.
By mid morning we had seen a couple more small bucks and does. Parker spotted a group of mule deer bedded in the rocks above an area called the Tank House and we decided to get closer for a better look. From our vantage point it was tough to see more than one deer but we were pretty sure there was. As we moved up above them, we could clearly see a small buck, doe and fawn. I decided to stalk them for pictures to give you an idea how most of the stalking is done here at Spearhead.
I moved down along the rocks to the area of small caves and rocks. At ten yards I spotted this doe tucked in between the rocks and took her picture. There was a buck and fawn bedded so I moved along the rocks on top of this deer and snapped the buck's picture in his bed - completely oblivious to me.
The sound of the diskette loading the pictures in my digital camera was too much for the fawn bedded next to the buck - she spotted me and spooked the others. This was fun!
In the afternoon we came across several whitetail bucks and about twenty whitetail does. We saw a few more mule deer including a decent 4 point bedded in the cut bank (we passed on him) but overall it was a slow day for us. Back at camp, Mike came in with a real nice muley and several others had stalks as well.
