Day 1

I was fortunate enough to draw an elk tag this year and that's what Frank Moore and I headed after this morning. We set up and bugled a few times until 8:00 AM with no response. While heading along a ridge a bull bugled below us. We moved in his direction until we were directly above them, after discussing the setup I moved downhill 40 yards and set up. Frank began bugling and raking branches.

The first bull, a raghorn, appeared below followed by a mature 6x6 bull. My first reaction was that he was "borderline" to what I was looking for so I decided to pass on him. He worked his way up toward me, now about 40 yards then he disappeared behind the hill. Frank continued calling and the bull appeared in front of me, walking within 15 yards. I was not going to shoot. The bull spotted me and casually turned and walked away. A few moments later another bull with a freaky left horn that grew straight out of his forehead appeared fifteen yards away. He spotted me and ran off. It was a great first morning!

The afternoon was a bit slower. We had no responses to our bugles but we did spot some elk (one good bull) on a distant ridge on the adjacent landowner's property where we do not have permission to hunt. The bull was a mature 6x7 that would score well into the 300 range. He spent the evening bugling and chasing small bulls around the hillside; unfortunately he never made his way to our side of the fence before dark.

We headed home as a major thunderstorm dumped buckets of rain on our camp. That may make the antelope hunting tough this week.

Nice to be back in Wyoming with friends at the Spearhead Ranch. I spent the day in the Windbreak blind in hopes of shooting a P&Y antelope. A terrific buck came to water and I thought for sure he was going to be mine. But, as he drank his body quartered toward me and even though it was 15 yards I decided to pass on the shot. Hopefully I’ll get another chance at him this week.

It was a pretty good day. I saw about ten bucks. Got to stalk on a 6 x 5 buck with cheater points, but an antelope spoiled the stalk with forty yards left. Saw lots and lots of antelope but never got close enough for a shot. There’s always tomorrow.

My morning began in “Double Trouble”, a pit blind concealed by a large inverted steel tank with shooting ports overlooking two pastures. Early, I watched a small antelope buck close the distance from a half-mile to 65 yards and then casually walk away without coming into the water hole. The balance of the day was slow, with antelope and mule deer visible only at long distances. This evening, Mother Nature has bestowed upon the Spearhead an absolute washing rain storm. While the lightening has been impressive, it may put a damper on the antelope hunting. Of course, I’ll be out there anyway and will provide an updated report tomorrow.

How blessed I feel to be out here in beautiful Wyoming while hunting only my second year. As if that was not enough for me to thank God for, He then gave me an incredibly fun day today too! Life is good. Leo was fantastic to get me on some great mulies. The morning saw buck after buck with Todd and I having too much fun. I let a couple of 3 x 3’s get the best of me but came out smiling for getting so darn close. While the afternoon was much quieter then the AM, the day ended great with me spotting then trying to stalk up on a beautiful 4 x 4 that was pleasantly munching away. While I was not successful, I had fun crawling closer. The sight of him spotting me and coming closer will carry me off to sleep tonight. If only he had been just a bit more curious and came toward me more… Well, it is off to slumber land for this excited and exhausted hunter.

I had a relatively uneventful day. Though I was comfortable in my blind and could see quite a distance, I did not see any antelope. I did see a badger ambling by about seventy-five yards out. The sky threatened rain on and off all day. Then, about an hour before dark, it began to rain heavily. Looks like spot-and-stalk might be the hunting method of choice tomorrow.

For my first hunt outside of whitetails, I was looking forward to a great time. I drew antelope hunting for my first hunting segment, and went to the Van Norman Hill blind. The view was spectacular, so unlike my home state of Connecticut. Throughout the day, I glassed some magnificent pronghorn. I also had the chance to peek at some mulies from my vantage point. There was some opportunity to shoot today, but I want to save my tag for one of the big boys I had seen on my way in to camp on Sunday. Hopefully, my story will be different tomorrow.

I started the day off with a whitetail drive down a creek. I sat in a tree stand while Dave and Elaine pushed the deer. The drive produced a couple of does and an owl that just about landed on me. After lunch I opted to sit in “# 1” to try my luck on some antelope. I sat for 3 hours or so and when some came in. After a decent buck circled my blind, chasing some does, I stopped him with a shout and took my shot. He was about 4 feet fromk the shooting window when my arrow struck him a little farther back than intended. He walked slowly away and bedded down in a draw. Since rain was on its way and he still had his head up we plan on picking him up in the morning. I have high hopes, we’ll keep ya’ll updated.
