Friday 1/1/98

This morning was the first day of Kevin's Cat hunt. Mine is now over (even though I tagged a Mt. Lion I could still hunt bobcats until 12/31). We loaded up the truck and headed down river. The weather was fine for hunting, there was a fresh snow the night before and the elk were pouring down from the mountains. Kevin and Curt were amazed at the elk sightings and although I had seen this last year, it was even more enjoyable this year with my new photographic equipment.

By 11:00 AM we cut several cat tracks and spotted nearly 80 elk, mostly cows and some small bulls. The cats were following the elk off the high country whom were moving down to lessor snow depths. Ron spotted several fresh lion tracks but they were all female - or too small to run.

Kevin and Ron took the snowmobiles on a 50-60 mile loop through the mountains, Suzy, Curt and I stayed behind and I photographed elk. Later that afternoon we hooked up with Ron and Kevin and looked for tracks off the roads - we found several.

On the way back up the mountain we spotted a magnificent group of elk which were gracious enough to let me photograph them - I kept wondering if we were in Yellowstone National Park instead of Central Idaho?

We got back to the cabin in time to spend some time to do chores then a government trapper came over for dinner to swap some great stories. It was a fun time!
