Goats 1999 - Day by Day

Woke to pouring rain and high winds. We fashioned a shelter using a tarp and some dead trees we cut down below us. This was a comfort but I knew it was going to be a long dull day sitting around. Luckily we had chores to keep us busy like boning the meat, and working on the cape.

Bobby Caping out the goat

Bobby was the son of a taxidermist in Craig, Alaska. A small town located on Prince of Wales Island. He worked on the cape, turning the ears, fleshing and splitting the lips. Johnny worked on the back skin and the meat. I boned the hindquarters and measured the horns. The goat scored extremely high. our first measurement scored very high, near 50 which would make it eligible for B&C listings. But the score was incidental and unimportant to me. We were just curious how much the huge bases would affect the outcome. The horns taped out at 9.5" each and were perfectly symmetrical.

The rest of the day was spent telling stories, drinking hot chocolate and watching the fog move in and out of the valley. It was our first camp day since we arrived here - pretty good compared to last year.

The meat was happy on our snowbank

Johnny and I discussed options. The meat was in good shape on the snow fields but would not last an entire week. We had the option of calling in a meat flight but that was expensive for Johnnie and I would certainly have picked up the tab for that. We could leave early and hunt Prince of Wales Island for deer (my goat tag could be used for deer) but I also wanted to continue hunting goats. We talked about it a while and I decided to continue hunting goats for two more days, then we would fly out 3 days early and hunt blacktails on POW Island. This would work out well for us.
