DAY 6 |
|
Thursday Morning We spotted a 340" bull at the NW corner of the property. This was the same place they were last night. The bull is a MONSTER 6x6 with mass, 50" beams and at least 40" width with long everything! Matt, Wes and I scrambled a mile uphill to get into his world. The wind was right and it was cold. While we were stalking, Rob was on the opposite mountain watching everything. When we got into position and started calling we got no response. We never saw any elk all morning.
What Rob saw was the bulls were 300 yards away and the calling seemed to bother them, they crossed over the fence into the neighbors property to bed. They never saw or winded us, they were apparently just not in the mood to deal with other elk. We are going to go back there this evening and see if they come back out. We saw three bulls, all were shooters. Thursday Afternoon We did not have any elk spotted from the morning so our task for the afternoon was to find them. Wes had watched a group of small bulls move to open country to the South. So we headed there to glass and before long we found them. From our morning glassing, they appeared to be all spikes but we were hopeful there was a legal bull in the mix. I have pretty much given up on shooting a trophy bull, at this point any legal bull will do. After all, this elk jinx has been almost ridiculous.
There were a lot of bulls up on the hill but they were hanging back. Wes decided to try some cow calls and when he did that the herd started running right at us. They moved from 525 yards to 150 yards in just a minute or two. Unfortunately, the wind did another 180 and they all locked up. It didn't matter since every single one of them was a spike. Wes and I just started laughing. I mean, are we snake bit or what on this trip? We can't even call in a spike!
We are down to our last day and frankly, the outlook is not good. We're going to hunt hard but also smart and make the most of our final hunting day. Our spirits are high and we are having a great time with a great attitude.
