September 11

It was nearly 6:30 when I arrived at the farm. I Walked quietly along the hedgerow leading to a sunken field of clover. As I got closer, I could see six deer feeding, all does and fawns. Normally I would would remain out of sight and watch the field, but today was different. I was not particularly focused on scouting, in fact I could care less. Crossing the fence in plain sight sent the deer into the woods. I continued down into the field when another, very close deer caught my attention. It was a doe. Her head was down, and unaware of my presence.

The afternoon sun was setting behind this small clover field - lighting up their small white flowers. The sunlight drew a golden outline around the doe's silhouette. A soft breeze moved the thousands of tiny flowers around the deer as she lifted her head then bounded away.

All was right in this field.

The weight of the day's events had been temporarily lifted. For a brief moment I was able to refocus my attention on the magnificence of life. And at that moment I was able to clearly identify my reasons for hunting. It wasn't that I wanted to be in this field, today, I needed to be in this field.

As the search continued for survivors of this tragedy, life went on in that field, oblivious to what happened a short distance away. I wanted to be oblivious.

On September 11th everything changed for all Americans. The terrorist act which intended to intimidate us had a different outcome. It united us. There were no blacks, whites, Hispanics, Jews, Christians, liberals or conservatives. There was One Nation, under God, indivisible and ready for justice.

I will never forget that moment. Nothing could have been more powerful than that doe standing amoung flowers. Evil will never win. Not, in a clover field in the United States of America.

Our sympathies and prayers are with the victims and their families of this horrific event. Please take a moment to reflect as you enter your fields this season.

God Bless America.
