I did the 1x6 outpost hunt on Sept 15-21. Weather conditions and lack of caribou made this a tough hunt. Big winds, rain and snow made for sitting in a stand for 10 hours a challenge (but a fun one).
The accommodations at the first camp (Wendell's lake) were rustic but sufficient and that is what I expected when I booked the outpost package. The guide (Jimmy) was good and had some good bow spots at pinch points and funnels. Unfortunately the caribou were scarce so we were moved to Willy's Lake after 3 days. We saw more caribou here, mostly cows and calves, but the other group in camp tagged out on some very nice bulls. The camp was very nice and had a great cook (Betty).
I had a couple of shot opportunities with the bow. One was a quartering to shot that I passed on and one was a very small bull that was running and I got the wrong distance and missed. On our extra day (couldn't fly out due to weather)I got two bulls with the rifle just before dark.
Overall I was very happy with the hunt. The logistics were great, they did everything to get us on the caribou, including moving us into another camp. In the end we got 11 caribou for 6 guys, though that is misleading because only 5 of those were mature bulls and the rest were very small. We (and the other group) were told that bulls were scarce so if you see any, shoot it and don't be picky. The only disappointment that I had all week was the lack of mature bulls. I ended up seeing 3 all week and one guy in our camp did not see a single one. JHA can't control that but you need to go into the hunt with reasonable expectations.
