Turnips | |||||
A member of the Brassica family, turnips are broken down into two basic categories, forage turnips and turnips with a larger bulb. The turnip has the characteristic of growing with the "globe" exposed so that deer have easy access to the entire plant in a food plot. This is a useful attribute as the entire plant right down to the roots is nutritious and protein filled and will be readily consumed by deer - especially as a food source in winter. The cold hardiness of the turnip is what makes it a valuable crop in any plot program. It is relatively easy to plant and less expensive due to the small amount of seed required per acre. Deer utilization is often very poor during the hunting season until they become accustomed to the crop. |
