Rape | |||||
Rape is a member of the Brassica family and produces a large waxy leaf that grows off a thick stalk. It can grow up the 3' tall with 2' being common. Rape provides a fantastic crop for northern climates, especially in the deep winter where sugar stored in the root system travels up the stalk into the leaf making it a very attractive food source for deer in the winter. Rape germinates quickly, providing lush green growth as early as 4 weeks after planting. It remains green throughout the winter. Seeds are very small and care must be taken not to plant too deep, 1/4 inch depth is all you need. |
