My brassica food plot is a failure. I broadcast into peas then cut the peas over the seed but I think the soil was too compacted. So I am entertaining drilling winter rye and wheat tomorrow. The problem is that next week the temperatures are low 50s over low 30s. Temps will probably come back up to low 60s over low 40s.

Depends where you are located;we just planted a cold weather plot two weeks ago in Northern NY.It will do fine.

Getting pretty late in the game, (I’m assuming for Idaho) however, if you get some warmer temps, your rye and wheat should still grow some. Not much to lose other than a few bucks and a little bit of your time and energy. Good luck!

I would plant the wheat and rye like Troy said. You know what you have, you don’t know what you might have.

I always plant wheat and rye around October first. It is just the right height when the corn is cut and the deer stage in it till dark

I’ll give it a try. Rain coming followed by frost. Not sure how it will transpire.

Winter rye can grow during warm spells all winter. What growing zone are you in? I'm in 6a, mountains of western NC, elevation ~3k. I spread an additional 20 pounds of winter rye last November to fill in some thin areas. I had a nice thick stand at the end of April.

Nothing to lose actually other than the cost of the seed. Good luck!

All it would take is a couple warm days and you would be in business. Absolutely do it now.

Rye will grow down to 33-34 degrees. Plant it now no worries. Farmers plant their wheat crops in late October and first week of November here in Michigan without any issues.

Also you will have some nice greens up until July or so.
